My 2 cents as someone who's not native to North America:

NYC and Chicago cannot be matched. They're the only two skylines that made my jaw drop when I saw them in real life for the first time. And both of them are photogenic from any angle (bonus points). New York still had the WTC when I was there and they really were impressive, so I have to give it my first prize.

Toronto is pretty good. Lots of people don't realize it's slim east-west but extends a long way north-south. This often surprised me when I lived there. So it looks quite different depending on the angle. Loses points for having too many bland commieblocks but gains them back for lighting up the CN Tower and Skydome (or whatever it's called now) at night, and for the island view.

I can't rank skylines as they all look great if you photograph them the right way. But honorable mentions go to:

Vancouver: for showing you can do so much with mid-rise buildings, density, and a nice setting.

Los Angeles and Montreal: Lots of people forget the importance of natural geographic features in a skyline's appeal. Both these cities have awesome mountains in the background, and also look great from lookouts, peering down (rare among cities). San Francisco gets points here too, for the bay setting.

Detroit: for its interesting older style 'scrapers.

Vegas and Washington DC: for being different.

Seattle: I just like it somehow.

I think Philadelphia is definitely in the top 5.

Minneapolis and Chicago have all the right angles but NYC has the layers.

my skyline is ALWAYS forgotten. I see list of like 20 cities and they never mention the Golden Triangle. IMO, if you make a list longer than 5 cities and you don't have Pittsburgh on it, then it is a waste. Yeah, it doesn't beat other cities in height, but the aesthetics of it, and the natural beauty put it far up the list. In fact all those lame magazines that sell papers by listing the top skyline, Pittsburgh is always on it. Forbes had it on their list, and the USA today called it one of America's most scenic places. You can also travel up a 300' hill side and look at it half way up most buildings.

Of course it isn't N.Y., Chicago, etc. However, Pittsburgh has pure beauty attached, hills, rivers, bridges, with incredible buildings in a triangle starting with the lowest up front by the point, and the tallest in the back by the base. I almost am not taking this forum legit with all the bs and nobody mentioning the Burgh.

I think you're being very biased.

A couple of the buildings are certainly nice, but a very impressive skyline it isn't (maybe it's the photo?).

Aside from NYC and Chicago, LA, Houston, San Francisco and Seattle all have better skyline (as well as Toronto and Vancouver if we're talking North America) - and that's just off the top of my head.

New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and Seattle have very impressive skylines.

As I said, it is AESTHETICS. However, I found out on most internet forums, most people are dumb, have little education in Architecture or urban design. This means, most people's opinions tend to be very stupid and moronic, and they can't find a city with great old classic skyscrapers, a collection of historic national landmark bridges spanning three rivers to be beautiful. Most people like the new boring modern skyscrapers of Houston, but couldn't tell the difference between old iconic skyscrapers like the US Steel building. Just like City-data.com, this forum, and skyscraperpage, they tend to be full of idiots.

Houston has a very boring skyline. Just like Atlanta it offers modern and boring looking buildings in a hideous sprawl of a city. Just because there are more higher modern buildings in a ugly wastland doesn't mean it beats it in aesthetics.[/

Aesthetics pertains to emotions of an individual - you're looking for the trees in the forest, rather than appreciating the forest as a whole.

I certainly appreciate the architecture in Pittsburgh, but when we're talking of skyline, it's how the buildings meld into a form - not how the buildings themselves appear - and for that reason, I don't think Pittsburgh's skyline is better than this:

Sometimes, mass (in this case height) is a good thing.

Besides, not all that is old is gold (not saying this relates to Pittsburgh, just in general - or do you think Pittsburgh's skyline is better than Hong Kong's and Singapore's as well?)

It's just that I'm sick of the 'but it's classic architecture' excuse being trotted out - it's history, not current.

I think the buildings are stunning, but as far as skylines as a whole are concerned, it doesn't matter if the building is 100 years old or 1 year old, what matters is how it fits into the whole.
