Bugsted, a city in the works . . .
Welcome to Bugsted, Bugsistan!!!
Bugsted is the city where I put my favorite skyscraper designs. It was designed and built in Gmax, the only 3D program other than 3D Studio Max that I know how to use currently. The city itself is only about one half finished, as no filler buildings, landscape, or textures have been added. The texturing is the hardest part for me, and will take the longest. If you have some tips for Gmax, please tell me. Otherwise, take a look . . . View from the north . . . (the green areas are parks) ![]() View from the south . . . ![]() View from the east . . . ![]() View from the west . . . ![]() View from above . . . ![]() Aerial towards Uptown . . . ![]() Aerial towards Southtown . . . ![]() Aerial from the north . . . ![]() Looking down one of the many avenues . . . ![]() Another avenue view, from the coast this time . . . ![]() A small map, I'll try to make a larger version . . . ![]() Any feedback is much appreciated. I will post pictures and descriptions of all the skyscrapers (there are 61) soon . . . |

I've used 3DS Max 2 & 3 in the past. I haven't played around with GMax.
The massing of your city's major buildings is excellent. I would say texture the buildings you have right now, and then fill in the rest of the city with lowrise cubes textured with street facing facades on them. I'll have to install GMax and see how close the materials editor is to 3DS Max. Then I might be able to assist you with that. There are many tutorials out there on 3DS Max's material editor. |

^Um . . . should have been more specific. It's not the actual texturing I have a problem with, it's the fact that I suck at paint and it takes me literally an hour to make one facade. Here's a look at the only building I have fully textured . . .
![]() And even that's pretty pathetic. I do have trouble, however, with getting the roofs of boxes and such to be different textures than the rest of the box. Anyone know a way to fix this? |

I believe if you can select the vertexes that make the corners of each face you should be able to texture just that face. I checked out GMax but the fact that there is no renderer or exporting capability in 3DS format (or any other common format) is a real turn off to the idea of using it. I'll stick with Rhino 3D. Anyways good luck with it. |

Okay it's a little different then I remember. Under the Modifiers at the top of the screen, go to Mesh editing and select Edit Mesh. Then on the right hand side of the screen under the Modifier List in the Selection part, click the button with a red triangle. Make sure you are on Select Object (instead of rotate or move object [or camera]) Then while holding down the ctrl button select the faces you want to be one texture(remember it will select triangles so you gotta get them both if it's a square. Back at the right hand side under the Modifier List click on detach in the Edit Geometry part. It will ask you what you want to name your new mesh. I would not check mark either option, just make a new mesh.
This will cut up your box (or other shape) into pieces, but it's the only way I know of to texture each face differently. I hope that helps. ![]() You can also do a lot of that by left clicking on the mesh. Those options are all in there as well. Last edited by Gendo; April 3rd, 2005 at 11:32 PM. |

Nice renders! I even doesn't know about that programme. I always use 3dsmax. This looks like very similar to it
