New cities being built on top of existing cities

There is a trend in Australia to preserve heritage facades and build new buildings behind and above them.
This reminds me of ancient cities like Rome that are built on top of countless ruins.

Examples from Melbourne. Some include rebuilding parts of an older building.

It's very common in Toronto. Sometimes the result looks a little absurd but for the most part they do a good job. Here's one of the more successful examples. The art deco Concourse building was taken down, 2 exterior walls re-built, and a modern office tower rose above it.

Another good example in Toronto was the Five Condos development. These Victorian row houses fronted Yonge Street with retail on the bottom. The condo tower rose behind the row houses and above another old structure that existed behind them. The laneway separating the 2 was maintained and restored.

Any examples from continental Europe? Most new high rise areas i can think of in Europe are built away from low rise historical areas. Preserving the character of "old towns" rather than mixing the two. London appears to have chosen to follow the New World and Down Under.

In some cases its heart breaking. I was very upset to lose the art deco Concourse Building in Toronto. I've resigned myself to the reality that only the most significant and grandest buildings in this city will remain intact. The rest will get bulldozed or some exterior walls re-created as a nod to the past.

We have so many functionally obsolete buildings in our downtown that 90% of them will not survive the next 20-30 years. If there is a bright side it's that only the very best is being preserved. Toronto is still a very young city so it's still in the process of accumulating its stock of iconic buildings.

Most of the time the net benefit is positive. Here we lost a 5 floor 1930s limestone structure but gained a 58 floor condo is a prime location while maintaining the historic character at street level. The space inside is up to modern standards and the city increases its tax base considerably.
