I'm not sure if it's exactly where it goes up to, but roughly, yes.

The slanted roof allows for a larger wall on one side that is used to display the banners and retired numbers.

Their co-tenants the Clippers use the older system. (see difference below as shot on a double header day on the same camera)

Clippers system is much better, I like to see the arena and crowd.

WWE's annual SummerSlam event is expected to take place at the Staples center in August, despite the previous year's SummerSlam being held here.

Staples Center gets a much needed new scoreboard. Click the link for pictures.
Quote:
When Kings fans enter Staples Center tonight for their pre-season game against the Phoenix Coyotes, the first thing they'll notice is a brand new, eight-sided high-definition scoreboard that even includes underside LED screens for those with premium seats to keep up on the action.

At Wednesday's unveiling, the Lakers' Sasha Vujacic, the Clippers' Craig Smith, and the Kings' Matt Greene were on hand to press the Staples "easy button," activating a presentation on the panoramic displays in broadcast quality 720p HD.

Lee Zeidman, General Manager of Staples Center, said that in 1999 the previous scoreboard was state of the art, but in 12 years it had become outdated. He boasted that the new screen is "the best you'll see in any venue in any arena anywhere."

The scoreboard is made of four 22' x 14' HD screens with 720p displays, a number of smaller boards in the corner gaps, two LED "halos" circling the top and bottom of the screens, and the four underside screens — an extra perk for anyone with seats alongside Jack Nicholson.

"These boards underneath will allow the fans who are close to the rink or court to see replays, scoring, and things they havent seen before," Zeidman explained.

Panasonic, which became a partner with the L.A. Live complex in 2009, custom designed the scoreboard for Staples Center.

Due to the arena's busy schedule, preliminary construction began at the Convention Center next door. Installation shifted to the arena immediately after the Sparks' WNBA season ended, giving the venue a tight 50-day schedule in order to have it ready for tonight's NHL pre-season game.

While Panasonic and AEG looked at arena screens around the world for ideas on the board's features, they then had to make them work within the confines of the arena. Because the existing hoist system was being reused, the scoreboard's weight couldn't change, and the final design needed to fit into the existing nesting position so that the board could be tucked away for concerts.

Still, Zeidman doesn't think that led to any compromises.

"I don't think there's any other place on the planet that has this," he said. "Fan excitement is gonna be amazing."

You mean a quiet, lazy, late arriving crowd?

this is so funny to me. Laker crowds are not late arriving. the place is packed before the game starts. also, i dont know how a crowd can be lazy. lastly, the crowd knows when to cheer and when not to. Laker fans demand championships, were not gonna cheer to loudly when were beating the bucks on a tuesday night in january.

the only late arriving fans in LA are Dodger fans, and the only reason is the hell that it is to get into that place. 4 entrances and minimal public transit, equals a traffic nightmare and yet, the Dodgers are always, always top 3 in attendance.

18,118 for the Kings

So I've looked and looked for any information out there about this, but does anyone know when and why they changed the seats from purple to black, and the black seats to purple?

It really does matter when or why. The why is more in kind to the fact that AEG owns/operates Staples Center and also owns the LA Kings. The Kings are the facility's "primary tenant" and black is their primary color.

Seating Capacity

Seating capacities vary for every STAPLES Center event. For basketball, the capacity is 19,079; for hockey it is 18,118. For concerts and other special events, the capacity nears 20,000 guests, depending on the set-up of the event.

seat change around summer 05. Why?.. I vaguely remember it being "professional appearance/arrangement" decision, i don't recall anything about it being for the kings.

3 times. The outside experience is great I thought, but it was a very lazy crowd. Very much like the Cowboys or Longhorns. Nothing like say San Antonio.

Lakers have scheduling priority. AEG owned the Kings in '99 when the arena opened so if they wanted to match the Kings, they could have done it then and the Kings have purple as one of their colors anyways. They just wanted a different look that was more neutral for all of the events they have there.
