I love the way it looks on the inside! It is nothing special in terms of seating layout but something about it I love. Not to mention the Ying Yang Twins made a song called the "Georgia Dome.

Heh heh. Yes they sure did, but the song has nothing to do about the building if you know what i mean.

Dome (in the way the Yin Yang Twins are using it) = oral sex.

There area bunch of seats back behind that seem like they were blocked by the stage. I wonder how many fans WWE lost with that.

The total attendance was 71,617, so they probably could've fit another 5,000 at least.

One more step closer to being demolished:

Quote:
Non-binding terms approved for new Falcons stadium deal

The Georgia World Congress Center Authority board Monday morning unanimously approved terms that are intended to provide the framework for a deal on a new downtown stadium for the Atlanta Falcons.

The board, at a special called meeting, OK’d a 24-page non-binding term sheet that will be the basis for further negotiations toward a more definitive, binding agreement between the GWCCA and the Falcons.

The plan is to build a retractable-roof stadium, with a potential cost of around $1 billion, on the GWCCA campus in time for the 2017 NFL season.

Key business terms approved by the board include:

The GWCCA, a state agency, would own the stadium.

The Falcons would operate the stadium under a 30-year license agreement, with options to renew for an additional 15 years.

A portion of the construction cost would be funded by revenue from the hotel-motel tax in the city of Atlanta and Fulton County; that portion has been estimated at around $300 million. The rest, including any cost overruns, would be the Falcons’ responsibility, although that could be offset by the sale of personal seat licenses.

The Falcons would pay annual rent of $2.5 million, increasing 2 percent per year, to the GWCCA.

The Falcons would be responsible for all of the stadium’s operating expenses and would retain all revenue.

The Georgia Dome would be demolished, and many events held there would move to the new stadium.

The new stadium would be built on the GWCCA campus, with the final selection from two sites – one just south of the Dome and the other a half-mile north of the Dome – deferred until the negotiation of a more definitive memorandum of understanding early next year.

Next step: issuing a request for qualifications (RFQ) to begin the process of hiring a lead architectural firm to design the stadium.

other than the owners, I don't understand how anybody could be for tearing down the Georgia Dome. a major renovation would make more sense than building an unnecessary billion dollar stadium. this definitely needs to be voted on by the public. if I lived in Atlanta I would campaign against this stupid waste of money, hardcore.

The Georgia Dome already went through an extensive renovation and another is already on the drawing board. They've probably realized they can't compete with it anymore. Every city will have a different need with their stadium. They just might not have a fit.

They don't want a renovation, they want a stadium that they can control, and get all the revenue from. All they need is a new lease that funnels more of the football revenue to the team, not a new stadium

It is insane how a 20 year old stadium is already considered obsolete.

I'm not from Atlanta or Georgia and have no real attachment to this stadium outside the one time I've been to Atlanta, but for some reason I hate this with a passion...

I was living in Atlanta when the Dome was opened. I mean it's something even a tier-B city would be proud to own. And now they are just going to trash it. ABSOLUTELY IDIOTIC and WASTEFUL!!

The dome was glimpsed a few times in season 1 of the Walking Dead, which takes place in Atlanta

It may be insane but not unprecedented. The Kingdome, Charlotte Coliseum, Miami Arena and the Orlando Arena were either abandoned, and or demolished before they were 25 years old. I'm sure there are other examples as well.

Well, the Kingdome was 28 yrs by the time they killed it in 2000. But the other three u mention above + The Georgia Dome (+ the late Fulton County Stadium as well) are all in the south. What a wasteful part of the country.
