prince charles shakes hands with mugabe
Charles shakes hands with Mugabe
Breaking news Prince Charles has shaken hands with Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe at the Pope's funeral. The Prince was "caught by surprise" when Mugabe leaned over to greet him, Clarence House said. President Mugabe side-stepped a European Union travel ban to attend the funeral service in the Vatican. Opponents condemned his presence at the service as an insult, with one Euro MP describing it as a "flagrant breach of the EU travel ban". |

Why on earth did he shake hands with him!!! This man is the guy who ran out of scapegoats in the form of white farmers, so turned to the western leaders as the problems that Zimbabwe has!
Also why on earth has Mugabe not been arrested! He most likely flew into Fiumicino which is Rome's main airport and that is on EU soil! |

Well I'm Zimbabwean and Mugabe shouldn't have been there in the first place.
Mugabe did the same trick on Jack Straw and they shook hands. I'm sure Prince Charles thought that a Pope's funeral is not the time to play politics. I think Prince Charles has had alot of stick recently, so give the guy a break, I bet Mugabe shook other peoples hands this morning, so why not start a thread about that as well. |

the vatican does not have an airport. as you say he used an eu airport. jack straw shook hands with mugabe last year, then to excuse it said the room was dark and he couldnt see who he was shaking hands and chatting to.

I suppose Charles couldn't really tell him to fuck off at the pope's funeral, so you can't blame the man for this whatever you think of him.

he could have refused to shake his hand.
as for jack straw, he had been having talks with zimbabewan diplomats and was lead into a room by them and they said "mr president, the british foriegn secretary." mugabe was in a chair and straw actually went over and shook his hand. if you see the footage youre very aware jack straw knew exactly who he was shaking hands with, the one thing he didnt expect was it to be caught on camera. |

I think it really was one of those things instintively that you do and seconds later think this is what I should have done. I think people are instinctivly polite so someone offers you their hand you shake it. What I would have done and this is very much in hindsight is go to shake his hand and then pull my thumb up to my nose and wave my hand at mugabe. |

I don't object to shaking of hands - it is meaningless Prince Charles and Straw are well brought up and polite. The fact they show courtesy even to one they dislike and maybe even dispise is probably a good sign of their person. Snubbing him would more likely have lead to an over shadowing of the occasion with potential to esculate further. I blame South Africa for not doing anything. Whilst South Africans and other african nations say elections are legitimate it makes it very hard for muc hto be done.
Would have been a good time for a military coup though. What's the point of a ban on mugabe coming to the EU yet he has come here on more than one occasion. Now instead of his wife shopping in harrods she buy's their goods in South Africa. |

Well if we thought Charles had a hard time spare some thought for what is happening in Iran right now.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/mid...st/4425487.stm Iran denies contact with Israel Israeli President Moshe Katsav (left), Syrian President Bashar al-Assad (top centre) and Iranian President Mohammad Khatami (right) The Mid-East leaders were sat just seats apart Iranian President Mohammad Khatami has denied speaking to Israel's president at the funeral of Pope John Paul II. Moshe Katsav says they exchanged words, but Mr Khatami told Iranian media the "allegations are false" and that they had not shaken hands. Syria has confirmed that its leader shook hands with the Israeli president, but added that this did not change Syria's position on the Jewish state. Iran and Syria do not recognise Israel. Syria and Israel are officially at war. Mr Katsav, who was born in Iran, said he had exchanged words in his native Persian with Mr Khatami. ... |
