Very nice Jakob.

Can the Holy Mountain (Athos) be considered as one "building"?

St Demetrios Church in Thessaloniki, Macedonia, Greece.

Quote:
The monument is a five-aisled basilica, with a narthex and a transept. Under the sanctuary and the transept there is the crypt. A chapel of Saint Euthymios is attached to the south-east corner of the church. Very few fragments of the sculptural and pictorial (mosaics, wall paintings) decoration of the church, survived the disastrous fire of 1917 but they are representative of the successive phases of the monument's history. The first church was a small oratory, built shortly after 313 A.D. on the ruins of a Roman bath. In the 5th century A.D., the eparch Leontios founded on the same site a large, three-aisled basilica which was burnt down in 626-634. Shortly thereafter, the five-aisled basilica was erected. It was converted into a mosque in 1493, it was restored to Christian worship in 1912 but it was again destroyed in the great fire of 1917. It was rebuilt and started to function again in 1949.

Hi guys I'm new here. I have to say Hagia Sophia in Istanbul is amazing, saying that so is the Duomo in Milan, it's an amazing gothic building as well as Notre Dame. My votes go to those as well as a mention to Hram Svetog Save in Belgrade.

The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra (was on the Eastern Europe Christmas banner on the 7th) is also really beautiful. It is built in the Ukrainian/Cossack Baroque Style:

and the Belfry(same complex):

a bit blurry, but it shows the whole thing:

Some parts are still being restored (the interior mainly).

Even though I am not religious... I like some architecture of many Religious buildings.

Now this church is not very well known but when I was a child I was there with my family and I was just too impress by its location and architecture.

so many great buildigns. For me personally it is all about the KOLNER DOM in Cologne Germany. That Church espouses everything to me in what a great Church is and could ever be.

My only regret is that it is not placed in my hometown of Chicago.
