Handpicks 400 professionals for upcoming Coimbatore facility

CHENNAI: The new facility US-based Cognizant Technology Solutions (CTS), on a sprawling 40,000 sq ft area, at Coimbatore, is scheduled to get operational in the next few weeks, a senior company official said on Wednesday.

Informing this at the sidelines of the NASSCOM HR Summit conference here, CTS Corporate Marketing and Communication Director, Mr R Ramkumar, said that about 400 software professionals had been identified to work at the new software development centre.

"In fact, so overwhelming has been the response, that we received twice our manpower requirement," he said.

He expressed surprise over the willingness shown by software professionals to move out of Chennai. Even from Kerala, considering the proximity of the Textile City, there had been a phenomenal response. Their in-house relocation programme had also worked, he added.

Were it not for the bomb blast incident, the complete infrastructure and climate advantage that Coimbatore had would have made it a popular IT destination, much ahead of other places, he said.

Currently, the Textile City is fast gaining prominence as an IT hub and with Industry bodies, such as the CII, working on the industrialisation of southern districts, Coimbatore is emerging as a tier-II IT destination.

Coimbatore resellers high on IT boom

Interestingly, buyers are looking for great deals and money is not a constraint for them when it comes to purchasing IT goods. In fact, Coimbatore is one of the richest cities in the country and boasts of maximum number of Mercedes Benz plying on the city roads.

Coimbatore is set for another IT boom and the resellers should equip themselves to meet the market requirements.

Chamber's appeal to CM for IT park

Coimbatore, July 29: The local chapter of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry has appealed to the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa to initiate steps for starting work for setting up an IT park in Coimbatore at the earliest.

In a memorandum submitted to Jayalalithaa, when a delegation led by chamber president, A Shaktivel, met her at the secretariat, Chennai yesterday, the chamber said the Government had already identified about 30 acres of land at Coimbatore Medical College campus and order has been issued to hand it over to the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu, the promoters.

However, the work for establishment of IT park was yet to start, the memorandum, a copy of which was released to the press, said, adding once the park become fully operational, it was expected to generate job opportunities for nearly 50,000 people.

Many Indian and Multinational IT companies have evinced interest in setting up their units and the IT park would give a boost the efforts for developing the region into an IT destination, Shakativel said.
