• With 600 new buses, the frequency at which they run will increase.
• Well designed and properly lit bus stations have ticket counters along with route and fare information.
• The bus station platform is at the same level as the entry of the bus, which helps in easy boarding.
• Traffic wardens and security personnel are present at most stations.
• Dedicated lanes with good quality roads will help in smooth movement of the buses on the corridor.
• The buses have automatic door with sensors
• All bus stations have television screens to inform passengers about the arrival and departure of buses.

The Sangamwadi – Vishrantwadi corridor is one of the six corridors that are being developed in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, in the current phase of the Rainbow BRTS network. This is being done with the view to solve the issues arising due to increased traffic and congestion in the city.

Nigdi-Dapodi BRTS service trial run to start next week

Pimpri Chinchwad: The trial run of PMPML buses on the 12-km stretch of the Nigdi-Dapodi BRTS corridor on the Mumbai-Pune highway will start next week, but the bus operation on the route will start only after IIT Bombay submits the road safety audit report.

Pimpri Chinchwad municipal commissioner Shravan Hardikar said the report would also be submitted to the high court.

There are 10 lanes on the 61-metre-wide highway with four lanes in the main highway. Six lanes are part of the service road. Dedicated bus lanes have been constructed on the service roads on either side of the highway. Each lane will be 3.5 metre wide. A total of 15 bus stations have been constructed.

There are many entry and exit points on the main highway to enter the service roads and vice versa. This increases the chances of accidents on the stretch. As a result, citizen activists have approached the high court. Hardikar recently submitted a letter to IIT Bombay inviting recommendations for improving the safety of travellers. PCMC has installed traffic signals at every station, constructed speed tables and installed structures for crossing the road.

IIT Powai had carried out a road safety audit in October 2013 and submitted a report containing safety measures for the smooth and safe operation of the BRTS corridor. The report also recommended safety measures for bus commuters, pedestrians and other road users, including motorists.

The civic body was asked to install traffic signals near bus stations, floodlights at raised pedestrian crossings and reduce the number of entry and exit points from service roads to the main road and vice versa.

Hardikar claimed that vehicles are often parked in a haphazard manner on the highway. Towing vans will be deployed for lifting such vehicles when bus operation starts.

Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar Metro line (Line 3) gets state nod

PUNE: The state cabinet on Tuesday gave its nod to the 23.3km Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro line, which will be built at a cost of Rs 8,313 crore and executed by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA).
"The work for the line will be carried out in phases. The first phase between Hinjewadi to Balewadi will be completed by April 2019 and the second phase between Balewadi to Shivajinagar will be completed by 2021," PMRDA commissioner Kiran Gitte told TOI.

PMRDA has shortlisted three companies that could bid for the project, including Tata Realty Siemens, IRB in consortium with Chinese and Malaysian companies and ILFS. "The final bid is expected to be cleared by March or April," Gitte said.
