a number of months ago there was a suggestion in the straits time forums that the lights in nel tunnel should be turned off to save electricity because they're not needed since the trains are automatic. well i hate suggestions like that. thankfully in july (or october i can't remember) when i was on the train there was a segment with lights on and i could snap pics.

here's a random station hougang probably.

@heirloom yah, I am quite curious to see how the art in these new stations in the new towns reflects their character

All of the Stations are underground right. Don't tell me I am wrong despite me having been there before.

The LTA kept emphasizing upon the ''fact'' that each Station along the NEL is unique. Sure they are different from one another in that they have different colour schemes and tiles but the basic structure is still a box for most of the NEL Stations. So the architecture of the Station to be, except for a few, doesn't really reflect the character of the surrounding areas. Clarke Quay maybe (its one of a few), but HarbourFront? The Station architecture doesn't remind me of anything maritime.

The interiors however tell of a different story. HarbourFront and Chinatown Stations both look unique from the inside. But generally the other Stations like Dhoby Ghaut Station and Outram Park Station just look like any other Station to me.

But its a good effort. If more had been done, the NEL could have cost even more than it is now. Coming to think of it, I have this impression that the LTA had a policy whereby if a Station's interiors are designed uniquely, forget about the exterior and vice versa. Smart way to both cut costs and ensure that all Stations are unique.

I think they meant that the interiors were unique from the outset which is one of the attractions of the stations. But I know thats true for stations like Little India & Chinatown, Clarke Quay etc. But I dunno about those in the HDB estates.

I have come across many reports saying that the NEL is fully underground, official reports. Yet, I have also come across many reports that parts of it are not underground, perhaps at grade, but usually these articles do not come from credible sources.

And anyways it is obvious that trains along the NEL run only in tunnels so of course its fully underground. Perhaps some people got the impression that it is not might be because at non civil defense stations such as Punggol, light filters through into the station, the platforms even, giving the impresison that it is not an underground station. And because there is a link to the LRT on top, they might have built the station at a much shallower depth as a result of this so I guess some people thought that since this is the case, they have the right to say its not fully underground...
