I used to go in Durandu's on the corner of Exchange St. East when I first worked in town, it was a tobacconist, the smell was just fantastic pipe tobaccos from all over the world were on sale along with the more usual fare, Woody's, Capstan Full Strength!!
To the left of Durandu's just a bit further up Exchange St. East was the Liverpool Stock Exchange, still trading up to the 60's, that may explain the sign on the corner second floor, I wonder if it was Bank of New York??

![]() Good pics. Makes me realise just how radical the canal is. Doing that at the same time as L1 and everything else is incredible! |

That's spectacular. There's even photos of George's dock, site of the Liver Building, with the building next door still under construction.

There is a great pic of Islington knocking around which just shows how much destruction took lace in the 60s'.

Fantastic Ged. I like that 'then and now' comparison bit of software you've got there. Hope one of the pages on your site will have lots of those, cracker that.

Heres another Ged using my own pics,the quality of the modern day pic has been degraded somewhat due to the process it went through to make the moving sequence,I'm not the slightest bit bothered about that,the objective of these "Then and Now" shots is to show people just that,Liverpool "Then and Now"..I'm more than happy with the results and I think it will be a popular feature..with people of "Our" kind like..know warra mean Lad...

It might look degraded to you, looks mighty fine to me, no need to make apologies for it mate, another good un'. I wonder what our Victorian forefathers would think of this progress, mind you the Liver wasn't even there back then was it. Anyway, i'm just copy and pasting your 'somewhat' comments (i've only ever heard gallery curators use words like that, not us Scottie roaders
)

Great photos Doug. I especially like that first one. I love photos of that era when they obviously aren't posed and just show people going about their normal day to day business. Amazing to see those wealthy gentlemen on the right hand side with their top hats, bowlers and canes contrasted with the impoverished young people in the left centre.
