Thanks PBR. Yes, I would say so, it seems to be SFX.

Regarding the whereabouts of that chapel. Part of Comus Street is on a bit of a different line these days in that the bit that leads down from Christian Street wasn't there previously. As Rose Place ran up from Scottie to Fox Street across Comus Street, it'd be on the North West corner of the X.

There's a full picture of the brewers arms in vol 4 of Freddy O'Connors 'A pub on every corner' and it mentions that it was built on the site of a brewery hence its name and that there was once 14 pubs on Rose Place. Seems the poorer these old over crowded districts like Scottie, the more pubs they had.

I'll give this another go at uploading.

99-105 Rose Place with 105 being the furthest property on the corner of Fox Street which was occupied by Mr Washington, a butcher. Taken on 2/5/1935 during a Liverpool Corporation Engineers Department purge on delapidated and unsanitary properties including many courts, these don't seem to be in that bad a state. The fancy property across Fox Street on the corner of Bute Street is Blackledges bakery.

Stay on same pavement..
stop..turn slightly right as if looking up toward Bishop Goss school..

You'd be standing roughly where the pic was taken..
The Welsh Chapel would have been directly in front of you..

Any more from around that area and that era ? My Dad was brought up at 111 Rose Vale in a shop -their name was Dorr ( as is mine) From what I know they were bombed out by the geeermans . Which is ironic as Dorr is an anglisized version of Doer (with an umlout) as his parents came from Hanover.

Now, as you may know from the A-Z, Rose Vale was quite a bit further up from that picture, running from Great Homer Street by where St. Martin's indoor market was and it led up to Netherfield Road North, still there in small parts. I'll look it up for you next time i'm in the LRO which could be this weekend. If anyone else has anything they'd like me to look up, please let me know.

ps. I've ascertained from this that pics of that area do exist but as thought, you'd be very lucky to get the actual house/shop concerned.

Much obliged mate - we lost most records of the family and my Dad died years ago so anything we find is good. We were lucky enough to find a picture of my uncles shop in Ainscoughs Liverpool that was on Netherfield Rd - name of Routledge - it was a chandlers. Tom Routledge was well known in the area not only because he was a cobbler and did shoe repairs but wore a big built up shoe and calipers from having polio during childhood.

the first 10 or so minutes were dedicated to Liverpool.

My Mother lived in one of those big houses on Rose place with 3 generations of the family. I have only ever seen pics of the front step with various family members gathered, and thoses in your photo could easily be one of them. Is that photo looking towards Scotty or away from it? Or should I say, was that Bakers on the same side of fox st as the Friary? I'll have to try to contact some relatives to find the house number, be funny if one of those in the pic our house and one of the figures was a relative of mine. The more you look at these old pics, the more you realise how much valuable city fabric was lost, not to mention the phenomenal communities that they housed. These buildings would all have scrubbed up brilliantly. My mother used to talk about a grand(ish) staircase and massive Kitchen with lots of rooms..... there had to be there were 16 kids, Grand parents and uncles in the family. Incendiaries wrecked their house (although it wasn't demolished till 1971), and I don't think it ever had electricity.

Tom, that pic is looking away from Scottie, the lower numbers being Scottie end. Blackledgers is on the corner of Fox St and Bute st, so yes, the Friary side of Fox Street, the Friary being only 25 years old at that time.
