Auckland's skyline is giving Australian city skylines a bit of a challenge but IMO is still a peg or 2 behind Melbourne's or Sydneys however AKL's Skytower is more impressive on it's skyline the Sydney's equivalent.

1. Sydney: Iconic buildings such as the Sydney Opera House and Sydney tower. Also great cluster managing, buildings do not have much distance between, which makes the skyline look dense.

2. Gold coast: Great location next to the beach, long line of high rises. The skyline has the tallest residential building of Australia, the Q1.

3. Brisbane: Well balanced cluster and great location next to Brisbane river.

With pics like that I don't understand how anyone wouldn't rate Melbourne in the top 3 skylines of Australasia....I know this can be quite subjective but Melb's skyline has increased so much in the last few years and it's really densing up in quite a few angles.

Skylines and anything design orientated are so subjetive. Personally I prefer smaller and denser skylines.

My favorite Australasian Skyline is ADELAIDE!!!

Its so cute, it has density and has a lot of buildings which I like.

Perth, Melbourne and Gold Coast lack density but look great from a distance. Sydney and Brisbane have great density but are both a complete mess.

ADELAIDE wins out for me

lol... Adelaide

I suppose it looks good from above, ie: up in the hills, where you can see the entire city spread out. But that's about it.

All the others have their good points. Melbourne for height, Sydney for density, and I've always liked looking at Brisbane. In NZ, Auckland has the tower but otherwise looks a bit sparse. Wellington looks great for a city with fewer than half a million people; all built up with medium-sizers and hugging the hills around the harbor.

Speaking of which... what happened to Newcastle? a city of 300,000+ and not a single tall building. Nice place, nice setting, but not pulling its weight in the skyline stakes.

There are a few cities which are not really pulling their weight, probably because they are too close to capital cities. Newcastle, Geelong and Toowoomba are probably the stand out ones. They should all be much bigger IMO.

If Melbourne could match Sydney's density how awesome would it look...hypothetical statement I know...I still remember what Melbourne's skyline looked like just after the might Rialto was built in the 80's and how sparse the skyline was and compare it to now...what a difference.

Agreed. Geelong is a major offender (not just in AFL). Apparently they like it like that, given the height limits there. But I'm always disappointed when I visit Oz, drive down that way and see the same three-story skyline yet again.

that's pretty much how I'd pick it with the exception I'd place AKL ahead of Perth.
