I think pretty much because steel structural system can be a lot faster and yet US is one of the major Iron producer in the world?

Concrete has been on pretty short supply here in the U.S. lately. They are pretty much going all steel recently. Ends up being much cheaper. In New York especially, steel is very popular. You don't typically have to worry about the wind/seismic loads that concrete structrues handle more efficiently.

I know almost nothing of the subject but I was wondering if there are other advantages to using steel vs. concrete. I thought U.S. steel industry was dieing and I also noticed that Japan uses a lot of steel structures as well.

For some reason, office buildings in NY are constructed with a steel frame, whereas residential buildings are made with a concrete frame. There has to be something in the building code that dictates this.

What an awsome tower this is gonna turn out to be - my favorite feature is the lightness of the whole structure and cladding, so transparent, a shining diamond.
