I think the University should have its own thread. So many construction projects in the last 15 plus years with more to come.

49er Alumni,

As you have been out changing the world, UNC Charlotte has also been changing…exponentially. I wanted to make you aware of one of these important changes that involves campus housing.

Moore and Sanford Halls have been designated for replacement. After careful evaluation, University officials have determined the cost to renovate these long-standing and beloved residence halls is much higher than building a single, new modern facility. Moore Hall will be open for the fall 2018 semester and is scheduled for demolition in January 2019. Sanford will remain open, with demolition scheduled for fall 2022.

I know many of you have wonderful stories of your time in Moore and Sanford and we want to hear them. I invite you to share about your best memory at the Rathskeller, your favorite meal at RDH and even the best item you ever “lost” out the window.

In addition, watch for more information about a Sanford 5th floor reunion in May for residents from the mid- to late-70s. We will also have opportunities for you to tour Moore and Sanford halls during Homecoming Weekend next fall.

The new residence hall will continue to enhance the community-within-campus-community that South Village has become and will continue to fulfill UNC Charlotte’s promise to provide life-changing experiences for students. The new facility is part of a wave of exciting, upcoming campus improvements including light rail at UNC Charlotte, a new recreation center and a new admissions and visitor’s center.

I welcome any feedback you may have and look forward to seeing you at an upcoming alumni event.

Sincerely,

Sallie Sistare

Belk Plaza Revitalization:

Scope:

Belk Plaza, located on the oldest part of campus, is the center of campus life. The previous feature, Belk Tower, was demolished for structural concerns and will be revitalized into a plaza for campus use. The plaza will include outdoor seating, lawn space, a fountain, tables, and a performance area. The plaza will be landscaped in an effort to improve pedestrian and bike traffic. This design concept came from public input of the campus community and alumni.

Update:

The site is being prepped for construction by fencing the perimeters and demolishing the site.

Estimated Completion:

June 2018

Charlotte Research Institute Entrance

The Charlotte Research Institute entrance, at North Tryon Street and Institute Circle, is getting the Niner treatment with an official entryway designed to mirror the main entrance at University City Boulevard. Work will include a UNC Charlotte sign, brick columns and enhancements to pedestrian access. Construction will begin this fall.

Science Building Renderings not released yet?

No construction update would be complete without mention of UNC Charlotte’s largest project ever – a $101 million science building. This state-of-the-art interdisciplinary facility will house instructional classrooms and research labs in chemistry, physics and biological sciences. The building will be located at the corner of Mary Alexander and Craver roads, and design is currently underway. Project completion is expected to take approximately 18 months, with construction starting in late 2018. The anticipated occupancy date is late 2020.

It's been nice to see UNCC grow up over the last 30 years. And w/ it's addition of football and essentially building an entire campus currently. I see this being a very big asset for the city in general. If they can continue to build brand recognition. Could be very good for future company recruitment/relocation.

Light-rail extension marks completion of UNC Charlotte’s most transformational project

The easy connection via the UNC Charlotte Main Station and the Ninth Street Station in uptown will open even wider the door of opportunity to expand the undergraduate and graduate programs offered at the University’s Center City Campus. Already, we can see beyond our current projected enrollment goal of 35,000 by 2025.

During peak periods, trains will come and go from the UNC Charlotte Main Station at a seven-minute pace, making it possible for many more members of the Charlotte community to take advantage of our beautiful, 1,000-acre campus. It’s now easier than ever before to enroll in classes, earn a degree, attend a Charlotte 49ers basketball or football game, and take in a theatrical performance or concert at Robinson Hall. Likewise, the business and research communities now have greater direct access to both new and established opportunities to benefit from the university’s role as convener in activities like energy summits at our EPIC building, and conversations within our PORTAL building about startups, technology transfer, and business-university partnerships.

UNC Charlotte is planning to develop a hotel and conference center along the Blue Line light rail

Preliminary plans filed with the city show the hotel would have up to 230 rooms, and Sorensen said they're hoping to sign a full-service Marriott hotel to the project. The center would also include about 15,000 square feet of conference space.
Charlotte City Council will hold hearings on the plan in the coming months, and if the rezoning is approved, Sorensen said construction could start in early 2019. The goal would be to open the hotel by summer 2020.

BOOOOO!!!! Did they give an opportunity to the roughly 50,000 alumni who lived in these two buildings to weigh in on this? I certainly didn't hear about it. These are two of the original buildings on the UNCC campus. They represent history, as well as chunks in the lives of thousands of former students. But of course this is Charlotte. Charlotte never cared much about history.
