CROATIA | Urban Transport Compilation

Zagreb (pop 1.2 million), the capital of Croatia has an extensive tram network which has over a 100 years history offering public transportation for its citizens.

The current tram network was needing an upgrade and instead of purchasing new trams abroad, the city authorities asked a consortium of 3 Croatian companies to come up with a new model of tram. Croatia has previously made trams for its own local needs, however this is all set to change with a new low floor tram which is set to be exported.

The guys in the Zagreb thread couldn't contain themselves, so I thought I would post some of the pictures from there.

The new tram is a Croatian design and is one of only 5 low floor trams produced in Europe. It sits 30 cms off the ground, however the difference between the tram stops is only 10cms, making it incredibly one of the easiest trams to board and unboard which is fantastic for the elderly and people in wheelchairs.

The CroTram or the TMK2200 was built by a consortium of three well know Croatian firms ...... Končar, TŽV Gredelj and Đuro Đaković. These firms specialise in locomotives, electrical engineering, etc.

The tram which was launched today will in about 15 days be fully operational on Zagreb's vast tram network. It is expected that 3 new trams will be supplied each month until the current order of 70 is fulfilled.

One of the unique features of the design is that it is the world's first axle-less tram car.

The TMK2200 is full air-conditioned, has a seperate compartment for the driver. Is fully equiped with internal and external security cameras.

It is 32 metres long consisting of 5 segments with a capacity for 202 passengers including seating for 48. The seating uses the latest in ergonomic designs.

Over 70% of the tram is built using local content which will further increase with later models.

Several countries have already expressed interest in purchasing the Croatian built trams which are considerably cheaper than their competitors.

I'd be interested in what people think of it ....

"BUILT IN CROATIA" ....

Looks comparable to other modern European/Japanese trams around. Good external and internal appearance. If safety and reliability are up to standards, then it can become popular as an export.

Looks very very good - good idea to produce them!
Unfortunately tram producers in Riga seem to be too slow with their new low-floor tram. Who knows, may be in 2008 in Riga will drive not Riga built trams but Croatian ones?

Looks nice, the design is certainly competative to other modern low-floor trams. If price and performance are also on par with the competition, this tram may become very succesfull!

@Gatis: if I remember correctly, RVR would deliver new low floor trams to Moscow, right?

To my mind design is good. Tram looks both playful and hi-tech.
@Vertigo - you are correct. Riga City, RVR and Moscow City have treaty that both cities will invest in RVR to produce new low-floor tram. But there has been not seen real, life sized prototype. All the time RVR announces that they are working at it.

Meanwhile Riga City can not wait - there are ongoing preparation works to introduce low-floor tram. In 2007 it should start working on one line, after some years - on all lines. I have big doubts whether RVR would be ready to supply good, new trams in trwo years time.

It is very beautiful but it seems very made-of-plastic to me...

Looks very nice!!! However I believe it's not the first axleless tram.

How many of these will be built? Who's making the electronics for 'em?

It also looks very light weight! (based on the fact that such a small car can tow it)

Do you have a spec sheet? Thanks!

70 trams will be built during the first phase of Zagreb's network modernization.
Here you have the specs:

And also:

It is 32m long, 2.32m wide, has configuration for 48 seats and 120 standees (configuration can change to specs) weigh approximately 30tons and cost only 2.1 million for each tram (70+) orders but it would be probably if exported somewhere between 2.5 - 2.8 million US$. Tram is whole manufactured in Croatia and about 70% of all components are of Croatian design and making. It is most likely over 150 if this trams will enter service with Zagreb Public Transport.

TMK 2200 - Length 32m, Width 2.32m, Weight 30tones, Passengers - 48 sitting and 120 standing, price tag, 2.5 million US$ FOB.

And old tram that is pulling this new tram is quite powerful unit as it normally pulls 2 more carriages as a standard.

Old Zagreb Trams - entered service in 50's and 60's...

And this TMK 2100, recent addition to Zagreb Public Transport, Entered service 1998-2002, continuing tradition of home made trams since 1892.

TMK 2100 stats, Lenght 27.4m Width: 2.2m Max speed 58km, capacity: 44 seating and 120 standing. No in service with ZET: 17.

Looks great, but it is a shame that they have opted for what looks like a Combino style motor arrangement. Easy access for maintenance (no need to lift the body), but at the cost of bulky protrusions into the passenger saloon.
