Why does everything the council touch Turn to Dust
dont they reallise that Parks dont work anymore
For example
MERSEYTRAM project leaders last night accused Liverpool City Council of putting the future of the project in jeopardy.

Cllr Mark Dowd, the chairman of Merseytravel, was speaking after a stormy Town Hall meeting in which critics of the scheme won motions that will prevent tramlines being built on greenbelt land.

The council's Liberal Democrat majority passed a motion forbidding any reduction in Liverpool's open space as a result of the £250m project.

It followed a motion by three members of the council's ruling Lib-Dem group to refuse permission for Merseyside's tram network to take up any of the city's parks or gardens.

One of the possible routes for Line Two of the project - which will stretch from the city centre to Prescot and Whiston - would involve taking some open space at Botanic Park.

However, the city council said this was unacceptable and reiterated to Merseytravel that parkland was not available for development.

They also called for regular fortnightly meetings between council and Merseytravel leaders to thrash out contentious issues.

The raising of the Botanic Park issue by the three Kensington councillors shocked Merseytravel because it had not been brought up in previous negotiations.

Cllr Dowd who was present at yesterday's council meeting but was not allowed to speak said afterwards that the council's decision endangered Government approval for Line Two.

He added: "The amount of open space we are talking about for the tram at Botanic Park is 500sq m out of a total of 187,000sq m, the equivalent of 0.25%.

"We'd refurbish and build a new children's play area. The tram would be great for the park and bring in a lot more people to use it.

"For the sake of a small plot of land at the edge of the park, which they have known about for a long time, they are prepared to demolish the tram system.

"We have a very tight timescale to stick to. If this goes through it will kill off Line Two. How can we run a tram there if the council do not want it?

"I will now be seeking advice from Merseytravel's legal people as to what we do next."

Cllr Dowd added that a forum for discussing controversial issues already existed in the form of the tram committee, which representatives of the city council and Merseytravel attended.

During yesterday's meeting, both the Lib-Dem and Labour groups accused each other of playing politics and whipping up hysteria over the issue.

Cllr Richard Marbrow, one of the Lib-Dem councillors who placed the original motion calling for no green space to be used, said: "Merseytravel has shown a complete lack of respect for parkland. To say that you can run a tram close to children's play

equipment and not have an impact is absolutely laughable.

"The motion doesn't mean that we're against the tram, just that we're not for it at all costs."

Line Two has been the subject of regular disagreements between Merseytravel and the local authority, which wanted it re-routed to Liverpool John Lennon Airport. Merseytravel refused and the airport is due to be served by Line Three as planned.

Line One of Merseytram, running from the Kings Dock to Kirk-by, was approved by the Government in January but confirmation of £200m Whitehall funding for the project is still awaited.

Ok, if we can't have a mod can we at least have a sticky thread with some forum rules.

I posted the same article in the Merseytram thread. It doesn't hurt to spend a couple of time finding the relevant thread and checking whether there is already a similar discussion on going rather than starting another pointless thread cluttering up the baord.

I'm not having a go at you Liam, its just a general thing and with so many members now its difficult for the board to be kept under control.

A few suggestions for some forum rules / guidelines

• Look through the forum to check whether there is a relevant thread already on the topic you wish to discuss
• Post general news items in the Official Liverpool thread and specific news items in specific project threads
• Source the news items with the name/address of the website it came from
• Use the skybar for off topic discussion
• Use the official Liverpool thread for small projects and discussion on minor issues affecting the City e.g Chewing gum tax
• Use The Sports Thread on discussion for LFC, EFC, Boxing, Tiddlywinks etc Do NOT start new threads on such issues
• If you want to slag off Manchester or Leeds use the City bashing thread in the UK skybar, banter is fine but anything more provokes arguments which aren't needed
• No forum user should post pictures of turds on Liverpool threads. Ever.

Any others we could use? Don't want to sound like a miserbale arl git but if we can't have a mod to sort us out we need a basic set of guidelines

Steve, that sounds like a reasonable set of guidelines to me. Incidentally, shouldn't you have posted them on the Official Liverpool thread?

Very good set of rules there Steve C. We need to be careful about how many new threads are posted as they split up discussion on issues like Merseytram, Brunswick Quay etc and they push other popular threads off the front page. I mean, did we really need to have a new thread to announce a half time score in a football match, good as it was?
