i think they will wait for the privatisation of the bombay airport. any talk of a new bombay airport at this stage will considerably reduce the value of the old airport

10 towers of 18 floors each by Reliance Info

Reliance Infocomm has acquired a 3.5 acre plot in Navi Mumbai close to Dhirubhai Ambani Knowledge Centre (DAKC) which houses its headquarters. The company is setting up a sprawling housing complex on this plot for its employees.

There will be 10 buildings with 18 floors each, with an estimated investment of around Rs 25-30 crore. Over 400 double-bedroom flats in range of 850-1,200 square feet will be built on the plot, located in Sector 16, Koparkhairane.

The company has given the mandate of constructing the complex to Simpless Construction and Larsen & Tourbo (L&T). Renowned architect Hafeez Contractor has been roped in to oversee the entire project. However, a Reliance Infocomm official declined to comment on the development.

MUMBAI: Soon, science will be all fun and games for Navi Mumbai kids. The hip-n-happening township will have its own science park, only the second one in the city after the Nehru Science Centre at Worli.

The City Industrial and Development Corporation of India (Cidco) plans to build the science park on a 20-acre plot in Khargar, near Bharatiya Vidyapeeth.

What makes the park unique is that it is being designed according to the wishes of Navi Mumbai's 11 lakh population. "We have organised an essay competition in which residents can write about their dream of a science park. The last date for submission of entries is August 30, 2005," Cidco chief spokesperson BR Gaekwad told TOI on Monday.

Those who work in Navi Mumbai but stay elsewhere can also participate in the competition. The essays will be evaluated by retired scientists of the Bhaba Atomic Research Centre who live in Navi Mumbai

That Patni Computers project is a new one in Airoli .. its close to Dhirubhai Ambani park. Their existing facility in Mahape looks kinda rundown by IT standards.

Jai, is that Swimming Pool and Sports Complex in Vashi a proposal or under construction? I assume its private

gyrations,

No idea. The map on the website lists it as being right on Palm Beach Marg, and the client is listed as being NMMC, so I guess its a public pool?

Eiffel Tower in Navi Mumbai!

By: Varsha Gopinathan
July 23, 2005
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Navi Mumbai may soon have a French connection. There are plans to build a replica of Paris’s Eiffel Tower at the proposed Dhirubhai Ambani Amusement Park at Mahape near Vashi, at an approximate cost of Rs 100 crore. This, feel authorities, would put Navi Mumbai on the tourist map.

‘Lot of thought behind it’

Said Navi Mumbai ex-Mayor Sanjiv Naik, “My father felt the need for a monument to make Navi Mumbai a tourist attraction. After a lot of thought it was decided that a structure like Eiffel Tower was the answer.” The life-size replica is expected to be completed by 2010.

BOT basis

Dr Jayaji Nath, standing committee chairman, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), has made provisions for Rs 10 lakh as token money for the project in this season’s budget.

He said, “The project would be built by the Reliance Group on a build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis. The money is for buying the land at Mahape, Adavli Bhuthavli area.”

Land acquisition on

When contacted, a Reliance spokesperson said, “We have been hearing about this proposal, but are not aware of any such development.”

Last year, the NMMC commissioner had said in a press conference that Reliance wanted to build the Dhirubhai Ambani Amusement Park in Navi Mumbai and that the land acquisition process was on.

The park would be like theme parks in Singapore and will have playground equipment, gardens and recreational activities.

Another spokesperson from Reliance confirmed, “Such a proposal was discussed between Ganesh Naik and Dhirubhai Ambani when he was alive. But even at that time, there were no commitments made on it.”

Designs pouring in

Naik also told Mid Day that the Reliance Group has already been receiving a number of designs from all over the world.

• Height: 300 m
• Place: Mahape, Adavli Bahuthavli
• Expected to be finished by 2010
• Prototype made by NMMC architect, Hiten Shethi
• Cost of construction: Approximately Rs 100 crore

Paris
Eiffel Tower

• Height: 300 m
• Built: 1887-1889
• Inaugurated: March 31, 1889
• Architect: Stephen Sauvestre
• Steps to top: 1665
• Weight: 7,000 tons
• Cost of construction: 80 lakh Francs (Rs 6.4 crore)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

first of all i seriously doubt it will get made. but more importantly, even if it does, why do we want to copy another landmark? why not hire some good architects, domestic or foreign, to come up with something original? something that when people see it it will remind them of new bombay, not paris. please guys lets not just rip-off other countries like in the rest of our entertainment industry, but make something original

Plus this is not happening. From the report it is clear that the Reliance group seems to be avoiding any on the record committments. They are a business group with profits to make. Hopefully they will not invest in such white elephant projects which have no originality. After all they are not a municipal corporation filled with dumbos wasting public money.

absolutely. but it did get me thinking, where are the great public space projects? ok marine drive beautification, kala ghoda renovation, juhu beach project, chowpatty cleanliness drive and all are either ongoing or finished, but are not really new projects. the new promenade at bandra is something nice as is the amphitheatre at lands end. but what else? where are the grand sweeping statements and magnets for public gatherings? a city needs these much more than just malls and office complexes

a gateway of india, an india gate. an indian version of trafalgar square. or even better pedestrian districts downtown. i know there was a major plan to make veer nariman road (churchgate) a pedestrian street, only discussed at the highest corporate and government levels. but that has not yet materialised. that is an absolutely fantastic idea! it adds so much to the whole city experience
