New York, Shanghai, and Hong Kong will remain 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectively. The 'race' will tighten up considerably between Chicago, Tokyo, Toronto, Dubai, Guangzhou, and Bangkok. It will be a 6 horse race for #4 in a few years. Melbourne's skyline is a little small, but I just love love love it. It squeaks into my top 10, but will have to go on a building boom to stay there.

I think these cities will experience competition from many more cities in the future. Just to name a few: Chicago, Tokyo, and Dubai are all safe, imo. Bangkok is nice, but imo Metro Manila, Jakarta and even Saigon are getting better and better. Guangzhou could be have some serious competition from other Chinese cities such as Chongqing & Shenzhen...

NEW YORK CITY, 2nd best skyline in the world! Once the WTC is finished I'll be having a hard time not to put NYC as No.1.

I think we need some panoramas- buckle up everyone!

i think new yorks skyline is overrated. it may have most skyscrapers after Hong Kong, but for skyline i prefer some taller ones that define the skyline. taking the ten tallest buildings of each city and looking at their average New York only reachs the sixths place. without the new world trade center complex in it there is something outstanding missing for me, but i'm happy that place will soon to be filled.

Dubai is the other extreme. The city needs to grow more and have more midrises and other skyscrapers that arent that tall but fill the land. the tall buildings often just seem unnecessary in there.

my favorite skylines are Hong Kong and then Chicago, they both have good balanced skylines and don't seem to crazy, Hong Kong has this epic asian touch, colorful and those two massive buildings on each side. And Chicago goes with its boxy style. im actually happy the chicago spire was never build, because it would have kinda ruined the boxy Chicago feeling for me.

It is hard to make a list though, i just make one without thinking much now. some cities are very close for me.

1.Hong Kong
2.Chicago
3.Shanghai (+)
4.Guangzhou (+)
5.Dubai
6.Singapore
7.Kuala Lumpur
8.New York (+)
9.Shenzhen (+)
10.Tokyo

the plus indicates that a lot is going on in the city and it may rank higher for me in the kinda near future. honorable to mention is also moscow, chongqing, tianjin and other cities that have been growing fast in the last years and may become first class skylines of the future

I understand your feeling about NYC, but I can't understand how you can rank cities as GZ, KL or SP above. And about your "(+)": I hope that you are aware of the fact that NYC has 4 supertalls U/C right now, and probably 6 more to come alone in this decade. Well, at least when the new WTC is finally done you will change your mind.

And btw I'm from HK, but I visited NYC many times in my life so I know what I'm talking about. NY's skyline simply rocks, and believe me after 1 and 4WTC are finished by 2012/13, everyone is going to be stunned.

yeah thats true also i forgot the + on new york while writing should add it there. Kuala Lumpur and Singapore get an extra point because i was there and i simply loved those cities, those are out of the objective view thats why they are higher ranked then they should for most people, guangzhou has extremely nice designs for all of their buildings and im simply amazed by the colors at night and stuff so there goes the explanation for the three cities ranked higher. and yes you are true about new york ranking higher very soon for me, i may hate tower verre as a building, but WTC2 and Freedom Tower as second place are my favorite projects going on in the USA also tthanks for your reply, apprechiated ~
