Metro Manila's skyline is impressive but certainly not better than this!

We got HK and NY as the top 2 but how about no.3?

Though Chicago has an impressive skyline, Shanghai has some supertalls plus they have more scraper and density compared to Chicago.

But I prefer Chicago's skyline especially the presentation and organization.

And here's a newsflash for you - Hong Kong only started developing in the 1980's. 100 years ago it was a mere fishing village. Therefore to claim (not saying you do - but many people on this site seem to) that New York is better because it has buildings from all eras is just ridiculous.

So, do we have a level playing field now?

By the way, I really am looking forward to NYC to see what this hype is all about - no doubt it's a great city - but I'd like to see where all this 'best in the world, by far' stuff comes from.

I think it's important for everyone to have an open mind and see what the world has to offer rather than to lock themselves into a debate of what is #1, 2, 3. There are a lot of very nice skylines around the world that cries for your attention, and a good skyline is not just about a mass of tall buildings. The true urban experience is an appreciation from afar and up close.

Very true, but sometimes there are times that we tend to rank our skyline with the rest and see who's better. And that's the reason why this thread is created, to see people's view on which is no.1 and even, no.2 or 3

It often boils down to a piss and shout match and in the end nothing productive is accomplished. There has been an ugly history especially between New York and Hong Kong stretching back before the time you started posting in this forum, so I don't blame you for not knowing. I myself have been trying to keep out of commenting directly on the issue while scheduling visits to New York on a regular basis.

Well perhaps if people took certain skylines for what they were as opposed to starting a debate which creates an unlevel playing field, we'd all have a better time.

I get what you mean man. Honestly there was a similar debate on this on another urban forum where I used to post before I joined SSC. But I decided to leave since I felt I was the only HKer there!

1. HK- I like the asian cities more than other (all those lights). A colosal skyline (not only Central, but also Kowloon and other cities.
2. NYC- It's also huge, and it has thousands old buildings
3. Chicago
4. Shanghai- I realy like the Oriental Pearl Tower
Other cities like: Dubai, Tokyo, Toronto, Singapore, Sydney, Los Angeles, Frankfurt

Shanghai
Dubai
NYC

After 5 years, it's still gonna be New York over Shanghai or Dubai.

Dubai may have some Burjs and other supertalls but it cannot match NY's density and quantity. Even Manhattan alone can beat Dubai even after 5 years.

1. NYC's skyscraper building speed is far slower than SH and Dubai. by quantity, it beats Dubai (not SH), by quality, it's becoming more & more lagging behind of both.
2. NYC = Manhattan, the other part of NYC is just miserable.

The reason why skyscraper development in NY is slower is because the city is already well developed with high-rises unlike Dubai or Shanghai. There are still new skyscrapers being developed in NY like One Bryant Park and of course The Freedom Tower. Quality, c'mon man, NY scrapers defines quality and are more iconic than either Shanghai or Dubai. Both Shanghai or Dubai does not have the classics that New York have. The Empire State and Chrysler Buildings are more known than The Burj or The Jin Mao.

New York is not just Manhattan. There are also developments happening in it's outer boroughs like Brooklyn and Queens.
