Obviously we're all familiar with Lower Manhattan, and Midtown, but Jersey City has a 238 meter building, and about a dozen other fairly decent sized buildings. Long Island City has a 209 meter building, and a growing number of residential high rises along the East River. And Brooklyn's tallest is 515 feet, but is much denser and concentrated than JC or LIC. Anyway, great find.
Yeah, the new developments (WTC, Hudson Yards etc.) will certainly help NY to regain some balance.

A quick, primitve sketch, for forumers not so familiar with New York.

5 skylines:
1. Midtown
2. Lower Manhattan
3. Downtown Brooklyn
4. Jersey City
5. LIC

Major developments:
1. WTC
2. Hudson Yards / Manhattan West
3. Central Park Area (One57, 432 Park Ave, Tower Verre etc.)

More NY, to give people an idea the size of Jersey City's skyline which is on the near side of the Hudson River.

HK needs another 2-3 supertalls soon in order not to be over taken by Shanghai or even Chongqing as the number 1 skyline city in asia!

The building on the right looks like OneIFC with the razor head thing cut off.

Another one or two supertalls wouldn't hurt, that's true. But as of now I'm perfectly fine with our skyline. Even when Shanghai Tower is completed, HK will remain #1, at least for me.
Also, the next supertall should be chosen carefully. We don't build just for the sake of it, aka "hey look at me, I have a megatall now" but out of demand. If there's no demand, then don't build it, easy as that. HK is a mature and established skyscrapercity now, we don't need to prove anything to anyone anymore.

Actually no, not really. Although the late 90s / early 00s very certainly an exciting time, and devolopers with big money and ego wanted to make their mark on the skyline. ICC f.e. was supposed to be a lot taller (574m) but out of reason and rationality the tower was capped.

I suppose every city succumbs to the edifice complex at some point. Even pragmatic Toronto: Eaton's College Park (1928) was to be the largest office/shopping complex on the planet, but only about 10% of it was completed. The CN Tower was another flirtation with the grandiose, but was built.

Interesting info on the planned super-complex.

Also I'd like to add: cities as Shanghai, Shenzen, Chongqing or Guangzhou are booming now, but it won't go on forever. Once the major boom is over, contruction of unnecessary supertall / megatall towers will cool down eventually, or even stop at all. I'm confident that by the time all those cities will develop a healthy self-assurance and in the end won't care what the world thinks about them. Even Shanghai is a bit insecure nowadays, although it's a great city. And last but not least: the last phase will be to acknowledge that tall buildings don't make a city , it's the people living there who will decide the city's future, fate and destination.

Anyway, for now, nearly every supertall tower is built out of prestige and for showing off. But I don't judge, it's the natural cycle every (booming) city has to go through.
