Bangkok, Jakarta and Manila are in the same position of having a stunning skyline but no iconic tower or landmark to distinguish themselves. I wouldn't put them nowhere near Sao Paulo though. Sao Paulo just looks outdated overall

I would say Jakarta has the iconic tower that Bangkok lacks, in Wisma 46.

I knew someone was going to mention that, but it's not iconic enough or prominent enough to elevate the skyline like how ESB does to Midtown, or PTT to KL or Taipei 101 to Taipei.

For me Manila though it lacks iconic skyscrapers but compared to its neighboring cities in SEA it actually has the most number of iconic bldgs...

Ortigas district alone in Metro Manila you can actually see 3 iconic(though not as majestic as Petronas but remarkable in their own unique ways)

*St Francis Twin Towers

*Unionbank Tower

*Umm, I just forgot the name of those other twin towers...I think its BSA Twin Towers...

-------------------

BGC has one but counting...

*The Pacific Place Twin Towers

-------------------

Makati also has but they just jibe w/ the other towers so they dont look remarkable in their locations...

Heres GT Intl Tower

And Enterprise Twin Towers

All those Manila skyscrapers you posted look quite ordinary though. There are literally hundreds of buildings like that all over the world. Few people will know it's Manila unless they were told.

There are actually lots of people in this wide world who refuse to acknowledge someones work & achievements when its already very visible in their naked eye just because of so and so... so and so, and so on and so forth...

Guys its already 21st century, its an era of globalization... Gone were the days of jungles, colonization...

isaidso: Sorry pal, after browsing a lot of skylines in the world in many SSc threads... I havent ever come across with a skyline and skyscrapers that looks virtually like those in Manila... If ever you have seen pls post it that I may see...

As I have said they may not be supericonics, for very few cities of this world have those SUPERICONIC skyscrapers... but virtually you could actually see that its Uniquely Manila... Compared to other common skyscrapers, they stand out and are more remarkable than the rest...

I personally rank Manila at my Top 10 list of worlds best skyline, possibly at 7th or 8th w/ 3 other SEA cities on that list....

Pls take alook in this 2010 pic of Ortigas if u could see a similar skyline like that in all the world...

Or the Pacific Place Twin Towers in BGC....

Or see this and not actually recognize it as Makati

image hosted on flickr

Or see this and not recognize that as the bay area in Manila... Miami has the same setting but you can actually see the difference...

Manila doesn't have a single building that you could show to people around the world that would result in them recognizing it as Manila. Manila doesn't have a Petronas, a Willis Tower, or a Burj Kalifa. Of course you recognize it as Manila, but you're also not representative of the average person around the world.

As true as that maybe, I still find it extremely impressive that the metro Manilla region has so many impressive skylines. Individually, they aren't much to write home about (well Makati skyline looks a tier above the rest though) but combined, they definitely cannot be ignored.

Well same thing goes w/ most cities in the world, they dont actually have SUPERICONS like Petronas, or Burj Dubai or Taipe 101 (sorry for Willis Tower im not very familiar w/ it)... We could actually trim that to handful cities who do have that... in my estimate 6 or 7 only... Taipei, KL, Shanghai, HK, SG, Dubai...

The rest are recognizable by their panorama but not because of SUPERICONS... including MM... But they still are impressive or even more impressive than the cities I mentioned...

Well, agree w/ SUPERICONS but w/ ICONIC Towers not... Its just like Bieber and Michael Jackson... the other is young yet still an icon while the other is already legendary icon...

Height doesn't matter as long as it's as tall as the tallest building, what matters is architecture. Manila needs a tall building that has great architecture, and an iconic look. By the way, is there really a 700 meter building under construction in Manila ? It is listed here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...n_Metro_Manila

the tall building in the background photo looks like the proposed pearl of the pacific

700m pearl of the pacific status today is just a vision.

I agree with you there, Manila is dense. You don't need a 500 m tower though; just one that stands out above the crowd internationally. Toronto could do with 1 or 2 buildings like that as well. We have the Canadian National tower, but a few more standouts would do wonders.
