Difference: mine is just an opinion. He seems to think his ranking is the way things are.

I never argue that my opinion is fact based on some article, some poll, etc. Arguing that Toronto's skyline is 3rd biggest or Chicago's is 2nd biggest in north America is entirely different. That's quantifiable based on data and can be analyzed/measured quite easily. 'Best' is subjective and is always going to be an opinion, nothing more, nothing less.

This thread is about 'Best' so there is no right or wrong answer. If this thread was about 'Biggest', there certainly would be a quantifiable sequence to it all.

Now that is just one problem with the list, don't get me started on Singapore, I have no idea why it is 13. Singapore has a very balanced skyline with incredible architecture, it should make the top 5.
There you go again alluding to some 'worldwide poll' to validate your position and lower the relevance of other people's opinions. Can't you just accept that other people aren't going to see things the same way as you. That doesn't make you right, or them right, or anyone right.

If that guy wants to put Bangkok first, he can and it doesn't make it wrong because you've looked up some poll that says something else.

Yeah, I don't see a problem with Chicago not ranking in the top 5 in the world and I dont think it is anymore. For a relatively "old" skyline, its still holding its ground among these new booming skylines abroad. It doesnt have the same wow factor as other skylines imo since many are getting more denser and taller. I do give it credit for being really balanced and imo, its still the most visually appealing skyline in the world

Asian cities have zoomed past Chicago in terms of volume, but I still think Chicago is a more striking, and thus "better" skyline than somewhere like Bangkok or even Shanghai that tends to be a disorganized sea of squat midrises and glass icicles. As well, I love the pre-World War II skyscrapers, so much more elegant and solid than today's skyscrapers, and only New York has more than Chicago. Lake Michigan is a strong positive in Chicago's camp; few other cities have such a vast, glassy body of water to reflect in.

That's how I see it as well. Chicago still stacks up very well to most skylines around the world. If I ranked purely on scale, I'd have Chicago down around 6th or 7th. Chicago has a very good looking skyline, has great architecture, and height so I bump Chicago up to 4th overall.

If people prefer Bangkok or Tokyo to Chicago, that's fine. People aren't necessarily going to have the same north American city aesthetic as I do. Put an Asian and north American city of equal size next to each other, and I'm going to prefer the north American one. I grew up here and it's what speaks to me culturally.

One just needs to frequent the Asian forums to realize that the reverse is true there. We all tend to have regional biases no matter how objective we try to be. All in all, that's a good thing imo. Differing ideas about cities, architecture, etc. is more interesting than a homogenous world.

In my opinion, as many others, it's a toss-up between New York and Hong Kong for the world's greatest skyline. New York has history, class, height, and so much density (Midtown alone is the biggest CBD in the Americas, with Lower being the third). But Hong Kong is new, flashy, taller, but not quite as dense. Looking at supertall projects under construction, approved, or proposed, New York has 1WTC, 2WTC, 3WTC, and 4WTC, One 57, 432 Park, 15 Penn, 1 & 2 Manhattan West, North and South Hudson Yards, Tower Verre, GiraSole, Grand Central Terminal Tower, 51 West 42nd, and more, while Hong Kong has the Admiralty Tower. Due to the current construction boom in New York, I give it the best skyline title, and Hong Kong a close second.

After NY and HK, there is a gap followed by a toss-up between Shanghai, Chicago, and Kuala Lumpur,. All three are very large skylines, thus they are constantly compared, but once again I give 3rd to the skyline under construction, and that would be Shanghai with the Shanghai Tower. Chicago is the only city with the majority of skyscrapers built in the modernist age, but Kuala Lumpur started the Asian boom. I'm torn, but I guess my patriotism leads me to place Chicago as 4th and Kuala Lumpur as 5th.

Funny, I was just watching HGTV and an Asian couple was moving from NY to HK. It showed panos of both cities, and I questioned my decision, but came to the conclusion it was right.

You have a good point. I always lean toward the skyline with the best aesthetics, which is subjective, and is purely based on opinion. Everyone deserves to have their own opinion, and I forget this sometimes.

No. That is Montrose Harbor and the Uptown/Edgewater neighborhoods. Downtown Evanston is another five miles north.
