I think Guangzhou is overtaking Shenzhen.... although it is a nose to nose battle!

It's actually the reverse. Guangzhou has been far ahead of Shenzhen until 2013 . It's actually Shenzhen which is catching up to Guangzhou. Guangzhou has already 7/8 supertalls which are topped out/completed.

10. Toronto: Will Rise Higher on my list, because of all the construction.

9. Beijing: I don't know what it is but I really like the Beijing skyline. It is very dense and aesthetic. It will increase in size and density in the future, but I feel having a big quasi megatall surrounded by a sea of sub 200m towers and maybe 1 or 2 supertalls will create an imbalance, and take Beijing out of my top 10 in the future.

8. Singapore: Just look at it! It's so beautiful

7. Dubai: Has Potential to be the best but perhaps not the population nor the will.

6. Guangzhou: Is getting better, with huge construction projects. One of the best single CBD focal point skylines on EARTH.

5. Chicago: Aesthetically unrivalled and beautiful, but will drop in rankings to Asian cities, due to lacking in infrastructure development.

4. Shenzhen: Fastest growing city in the world (construction wise). What will define its skyline 5 years from now is U/C or in prep phase and yet, it already has one of the tallest and biggest skylines on earth. The only city on earth where a 300m+ is just a filler.

3. New York: Will overtake Hong Kong in a few years because of incredible construction plans. THE CITY that NEVER SLEEPS. The Original futuristic metropolis. Amazing architectural heritage and history Combined with modern sleek offices and supertall residential towers.

2. Hong Kong: Densest Skyline BY FAR. Extremely beautiful. Already so high up, that no city other than New York or Shenzhen could pass it, regardless of almost NO construction taking place on the former british colony.

1. Shanghai: IMHO the best skyline. Unrivalled in how futuristic it looks. Still growing but slowly. On a clear night, is probably the best urban sight on earth.

^ Good list. Here's mine:

#1 New York: has it all
#2 Hong Kong: density, huge amount of skyscrapers / highrises, backdrop
#3 Chicago: very aesthetically pleasing, great variety of skyscrapers
#4 Shanghai: love the BIG 3 and the skyline at night
#5 Guangzhou: probably the most compact skyscraper cluster in the world, looks really great
#6 Tokyo: huge metropolis, countless skyscrapers; density
#7 Shenzhen: amazing amount of supertalls which do look good
#8 Dubai: world's tallest building, dozens of supertalls
#9 Toronto: many highrises, nice downtown core; love the setting (lake)
#10 L.A.: has a great focal point (downtown)

Yeah it is, it has some supertalls in the pipeline, including the Spire which is 600m, which was recently revived. Chicago is filling up the rest of it's empty lots with 40-50 story buildings, but once those start to dwindle, you can expect all new development in key areas to reach for the sky. You know, build up instead of out. Right now, they aren't forced to build way up, but very soon, they will be. Same situation as with NY. Chicago has a lot of land, but everyone wants to build in the Loop area of downtown, so they are going to start building higher and higher. In the meantime, buildings in the range of 150-250m are filling up tons of lots, making all the areas more dense.

But again, there are two 600m proposals, right now.

Another thing is, height isn't everything, I prefer aesthetics. I will always prefer something like the tower Verre to the Hudson Spire.
