And the oldest suspension bridge spans between West Virginia and Ohio. The 2nd oldest is also in Ohio. They don't get noticed because of where they are.

According to this, Bangkok's skyline is actually quite a bit bigger than Singapore's.

Personally, I think they are both overrated on the world stage. However, your comment is completely inaccurate. Only one of those 2 skylines slips into the top 10 (size-wise), and it's not Singapore.

Obviously, you prefer Singapore, and I think many other people do too. However, numbers aren't subjective. Bangkok is ~30% bigger.

this thread is all about world best skylines and we are not talking about the size. Singapore deserve to be in this thread because it has beautiful skyline that are easily recognized while for Bangkok, despite with its massive skyline, it just dull in my opinion.

That site you linked is a great resource but it doesn't tell the whole story. Take Tokyo for instance. It's a third larger than Chicago, but is it a third better? Size matters, but if they're spread out over a vast area and there isn't a notable focal point the overall skyline won't match the ranking it receives in that study. Bangkok is a little like that while Singapore's point total is inflated by a huge number of apartment blocks in the 90-150m category.

I do use that resource but then adjust for density, architectural layering, iconic structures, layout, balance, etc.

Again, that's your opinion. I think Singapore is overrated. The height limit makes it look like one giant wall.

The thing is, opinions are just opinions. Numbers can't really be argued. (except for the spire thing)

Just because you don't like Bangkok as much, the 9th largest skyline in the world deserves to be on this thread, period.

I do hate seeing it spammed over and over though. (which it certainly has been) But you know what? I don't want to see Singapore spammed on here either. That's my opinion. But in the scheme of things, neither of our opinions are worth a hill of beans. Both skylines deserve to be shown here.

I don't know, I've never been. Would you argue that the 5th largest skyline in the world doesn't deserve to be represented here?

I will say that I went to Chicago, and over half the towers that make up that skyline are hideous. Truly. Of course, Chicago has 4 dominant supertall gems, a solid historical layer in the 140-150m range, a lot of nice office buildings, and some ground breaking residentials like Lake Point Tower. However, I could also make an argument that every single skyscraper within 4-5 blocks of the John Hancock Center looks like garbage.

Opinions are fine, but not to exclude something deserving just because you don't like it. Plenty of people hate Dubai, but it still deserves to be here.

How about Toronto? The setup is great, good height, good density, but how much cheap blue glass can you fit into one city? It's outside the world's Top 15 size-wise too. But you know what? It deserves to be here, and so does any Top 20 skyline on this site. http://tudl0867.home.xs4all.nl/skylines.html

You can say you don't like them, but you can't say they don't have a place on this thread.

Actually, Toronto's skyline is not as glassy as Vancouver, although it has changed considerably with the recent condo boom.

I have a hard time leaving Tokyo (5th largest) and Dubai (4th largest) out of my top 10, but that's where I have them. If we all prioritized the same things and had the same preferences our lists would all be identical. I do give a lot of weight to scale and height, but that can only carry a skyline so far. We seem to be in agreement on that point.

Btw, is someone arguing that Dubai and Tokyo shouldn't be discussed in this thread?

Deserve is a strong word and likely the wrong one. Personally, I have no issue with any city in the top 25 in that study being highlighted in this thread. Panama City isn't my cup of tea, but I have zero issue with its inclusion here. Same goes for a number of other skylines. It's when we start talking about London, Houston, or Calgary that it starts getting silly.

I haven't said they don't have a place on this thread and I haven't said I don't like them. I've said that a top 10 in size isn't the same as a top 10 best as other factors come into play. I'm frankly quite puzzled as to why you're directing this at me. You seem to have an even more exclusive cut off point than I do.

No, it was Bangkok. My original (for this argument) post 6586 was a direct response to post 6555, which our good friend Quantum seemed to back up in post 6558. My only point is that a skyline that size has a right to be shown on this thread, whether or not it's among your favorites. That's where you jumped in with your Tokyo and Chicago comparison. It really had nothing to do with my argument, unless you wholeheartedly believed that Tokyo wasn't thread worthy and would take steps to prevent it from being shown here.

I'm not being exclusive so much as saying that any skyline of a certain size has a right to be shown here, whether most people like it or not. Top 20 isn't a "cut-off" point. I'm just saying that nobody has the right to exclude a skyline that large from this thread. I certainly wouldn't complain about 21-25 being shown here.

Never liked Vancouver's skyline. "Smoke and mirrors" if you ask me. The residentials with the high floor counts make it look more impressive than it really is. Otherwise it's really just too short to be given so much credit. If it was possible to put skylines side by side and drive through the middle of them for a true comparison, Vancouver would be lucky to be Top 15 in North America.

My list constantly changes, which I think it has the right to given the insane amount of construction going on. 4 out of 5 are Chinese, and depending on my mood I could literally list them in any order, although I expect Shenzhen to eventually emerge the winner there.

1. Tie NYC
1. Tie Shanghai
3. Hong Kong
4. Guangzhou
5. Shenzhen
6. Chicago
7. Dubai
8. Chongqing
9. Tokyo
10. Kuala Lumpur

Given the right angle plus a nice lighting, and Guangzhou looks pretty neat. It's already in my top5.

Duibai got many supertalls but most of them look a bit tacky imo. GZ has a good skyline with several supertalls but I still prefer the californian skylines.
