Mathematical rankings give people the unbiased reality of what exists. One just needs to be cognizant of what it's measuring. It's only when one adds subjective elements like architecture, layering, diversity, layout, etc. that controversy creeps in.

The above study is a great starting point in determining what's 'Best'.

true that. this list almost corresponds to most people's list. the top 5 in that list are consistently mentioned with varying arrangements while the bottom can be really affected by subjective opinions. here's my take.

1-2 a constant battle between NYC and HK. both are massive, iconic, and breathtaking.
NYC - usually chosen because of the mixture of old and new. this is at least my personal reason why i always choose NY over HK. art deco buildings add elegance to the skyline and central park was the best decision.
HK- the settng is probably the most mentioned reason besides the modern supertalls and the sheer magnitude of the skyline. mountains as backdrops and harbors really heightened the skyline. perfect setting for me.
3 Shanghai is probably the comfortable owner of this spot. same reason with HK minus the natural setting and less buildings.
4-5 Chicago - like NY but on a lesser magnitude.
or Tokyo - massive with iconic towers.
then again, Nor Am cities like Chicago has the advantage of giving that elegance just looking at pics.
6-10 Any of the chinese cities. they have the quantity density height but are overshadowed by HK and Sh and therefore sometimes underrated. my problem with them is that they look alike even with HK and SH.
or Dubai - i personally find Dubai a bit overrated but it has very modern buildings and currently has the tallest scraper.
or Toronto - again, same reason with NY and Chicago. the pictures i saw of Toronto are just soooooo good to look at. i dont get bored. the thing about the 3 NorAm cities i mentioned is that they dont hurt your eyes even youve looked at so many pictures of them. the same thing cant be said to many asian cities expcept for maybe HK and SH.
or SEA cities - i personally like SG, KL, MM. they have good clustering but somehow they lack one quality that would make their top 10 inclusion more agreeable.
SG - quality buildings with nice cluster but greatly lacks HEIGHT. and the skyline looks small despite the numerous building listed. but the skyline is well balanced, looks great. if only one supertall is built in the middle, skyline wouldnt have to look flat but i honestly believe its one of the best. the setting is really great too.
MM - specifically Makati. another well balanced skyline but lacks ICONIC towers. ive seen the downtown area personally and the skyline looked really impressive from the inside at least. quality glassy buildings are concentrated in the middle that the skyline looked less impressive in pics taken from afar. i like the downtown feel of this city.
KL - has height, iconic PTT and good clustering but greatly lacks DENSITY. it would have been great if they build more buildings around KLCC because the skyline greatly depends on PTT. the buildings around it although 200+ m look short. there are like 3 sticks sprouting from among the grass. but should be in the top 10.

its ok if you dont read this. very looooong indeed.

This is Shenzhen

This is Chongqing

They don't look similar, you don't actually know what they look like :P

Top 10
1. Hong Kong
2. New York
3. Shanghai
4. Dubai
5. Tokyo
6. Shenzhen
7. Chicago
8. Guangzhou
9. Bangkok
10. Chongqing

WOAH!! the spot for TOP 10 is one tough battle!!

Quote:
10 12794 Chongqing China
11 12767 Singapore Singapore
12 12725 Manila Philippines
So basically, no change in rankings.. in the top 10.
BUT Chongging barely hold on to the spot.. Next year's top 10 spot will be interesting, with 2 contenders!!!

Does anyone have the numbers for 2012?.. i just want to compare the changes.

Even though the New York skyline is over twice as massive, there is just something about the way the Chicago skyline comes together.

Agreed. It is definitely top 5 in the world. Most people underestimate it.

[QUOTE=Faisal Shourov;120984280]How are the Chinese cities similar? They look more different from each other than American cities do

I know what they look like that's why i said that. maybe because of the abundant amount of residential buildings that resemble each other. maybe i have used the wrong term. i should have used resemble instead. thanks for the pics. love them. if i may ask? what are the unique characteristics of each chinese cities' skylines that made them distinct from each other. please answer thanks! coz i think you interpreted what i said about them literally that you had to post pics of them.
