Chicago's ranking has also taken a beating over the years. Next year there is no doubt Guangzhou will overtake it.

As requested, the ranking in 2012:

1. Hong Kong 91,383 pts
2. New York 37,259
3. Shanghai 23,688
4. Tokyo 23,078
5. Dubai 22,947
6. Chicago 16,884
7. Guangzhou 16,529
8. Bangkok 15,936
9. Shenzhen 14,096
10. Singapore 11,340
So I thought, Singapore was catching up.. when actually it was Chongging who caught up to TOP 10...

I just realized that Shenzen jumped from top 9 to TOP 6!!
overtaking Chicago, Guangzhou and Bangkok!!
To put it in perspective.. it increased by around 4,800 points.. It basically added one Melbourne to its skyline. (more than actually)

Interestingly.... Dubai also ranked higher from 5 to top 4..overtaking Tokyo.

Although, this is baffling..
Hong Kong 91,383 pts ---2012
Hong Kong 90386 - 2013

I think some of those numbers are wrong as I did a points increase table for 2012-2013. I'll try to find the table so I can subtract to get the 2012 table. FOUND IT! I believe these were the 15 cities that added the most points. In other words Shenzhen added 2.663 km of skyscraper not including the first 90 m on each building.

Points Increase 2012-2013

Shenzhen 2663
Shenyang 2542
Manila 2453
Wuxi 1839
Jakarta 1814
Wuhan 1638
Toronto 1461
Tianjin 1460
Kuala Lumpur 1454
Chongqing 1379

Dubai 1281
Chengdu 1225
New York 961
Hangzhou 876
Shanghai 876
Moscow 863
Qingdao 804
Istanbul 744
Tokyo 743
Singapore 712

Sao Paulo 672
Panama City 607
Osaka 572
Dalian 518
Seoul 508
Hong Kong 489
Bangkok 472
Mumbai 453
Busan 382
Mexico City 369

Something's a bit odd as I distinctly remember Jakarta passing Toronto but this has Jakarta already ahead in 2012. Any how, the 2012 list was something like this:

01. Hong Kong 89,897
02. New York 37,763
03. Shanghai 24,902
04. Tokyo 23,943
05. Dubai 23,632
06. Chicago 16,884*
07. Guangzhou 16,529*
08. Bangkok 16,371
09. Shenzhen 16,186
10. Singapore 12,055

11. Chongqing 11,415
12. Seoul 11,008
13. Manila 10,272
14. Kuala Lumpur 9,657
15. Panama City 8,734
16. Jakarta 8,662
17. Toronto 8,446
18. Chengdu 6,972
19. Busan 6,388
20. Osaka 6,197

Oh, now I understand why you asked for the year 2012. The website currently is from 2014 (Sept 2014). It mistakenly has 2013 on the webpage. Below are also previous years. It's posted as images so it could be posted faster.

Yes you are right about Hong Kong, it's points dropped.....issues with emporis.
Jakarta surpassed Toronto in 2013, but it was ahead of Toronto in 2011 and 2010.

It's amazing how many cities there are with huge growth. I mean Toronto basically grew the skyline by 50% in only a few years yet didn't move up a single position!

For the worlds best skyline, I find it so hard to beat New York City.

Personally, a skyline cannot be the best on pure height... that makes no sense. I believe that design, history, cohesion, and positioning need to be taken into consideration.

I really do believe it's hard to beat New York City at this.

For example, if you were to ask a young child to think of a skyscraper; most children around the world would say; "Empire State Building", or the "Twin Towers" etc. I know that Chicago claim to have the worlds first skyscraper but it was New York that made it famous. Historically, NYC is etched on mine and many others hearts for having the greatest skyline ever.

Shenzhen only, growing by 137.9% (2009-1014) Effectively doubling it's skyline in this period.

(if based on info above - Info on Chengdu, Shenyang and Tianjin is not complete for the 6 years)

Next to 1. Shenzhen is
2. Manila 92.86%
3. Jakarta 87.41%
4. Singapore 65.87%
5. Guangzhou 65.59%
6. Toronto 63.67%
7. Dubai 63.34%

But if Points are to be the criteria.. the highest points increase are (for 6 years)
*only those with complete info
1. Shenzhen 10,926 points (Adding one Kuala Lumpur to its skyline in just 6 years!!!)
2. Dubai 9,661
3. Shanghai 7,649
4. Guangzhou 6,800
5. Manila 6,127
6. Hong Kong 5,464
7. Singapore 5,070

I created a spreadsheet that tabulates all the info above. So interpretation would be easier.

I think it is safe to say that, "Manila is growing on par with Chinese cities"

Can see manila density getting better and skyline itself becomes more massive. Its definitely the tiger os ASEAN cities. It would be great if they do have few supertalls under construction or plan to nurture a distinctive skyline

So, in conclusion..

Shenzhen is the "fastest growing skyline in the world"

the numbers prove that
