I think you are seeing the tower from the side on the first picture. From that point of view, you cannot see the "inverted Y" shape.

Maybe it's taken from the side so it just looks like the side bits aren't there any more. Looks like you beat me to it JP. (Hope you don't mind me re-posting your Toronto find here).

Not at all, check the authors Flickr page, there is an amazing sequence of aerial shots from downtown to York

More of the Six

Smog over the city by A. Wee, on Flickr

Quite like this angle. From higher up you get to see a little more. There are 202 buildings 100m+ under construction or proposed for Toronto (not including Mississauga). I imagine at least 180 of them would end up in the frame above.

It's too bad that TO chooses to build its skyline from south to north axis (farther from the lake).

If TO chose to build its skyline from west to east axis (along the lake shore), it would have an awesome view from the lake, a long stretch of skyscrapers, just like Chicago.

Development happens where the best transportation routes exist. It's true of cities (they usually spring up on trade routes or along the water) but it's also true within cities. Toronto has a north-south skyline spine because of Yonge Street and the subway that was built underneath it.

Without it, our skyline would have followed a more natural path and followed the lakeshore (like in Chicago). I much prefer the route we took because it resulted in the built up downtown stretching many many km inland. It's 5 km to Yorkville where it gives way to mid rise and then low rise only to sprout up again at St. Clair, then Eglinton, then again in North York. It has resulted in the feeling of 'endless city'. It tricks one into thinking that one's in a bigger city than Chicago when the reverse is true.

Toronto only recently started building east-west. We'll end up with a great skyline from the lake in addition to the one that shows the north-south spread.
