I think San Francisco has a really underrated skyline. The dense form of the skyline, along with the way it interacts with its great natural environment makes it, in my opinion, a nicer skyline than many others that have more buildings than San Francisco. I would say the San Francisco skyline is nicer than the Los Angeles and Miami skylines, even though those two are larger. And thats saying a lot, because both of those cities have great skylines as well.

Agreed, San Francisco is my third favorite skyline in the US.... graded higher than Miami and Los Angeles. There is just something about SF's skyline that is very attractive. Perhaps is the good bulk of buildings of many different architectural styles and the nice heart beat pattern they form thanks to the city's topography

San Francisco's skyline has never done anything for me. It has density but lacks height and a strong focal point. I find it under whelming in the same way that I find Sydney's and Vancouver's skylines disappointing. In the US, I'd rank skylines as follows:

New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Houston, Seattle, Minneapolis, Pittsburgh .... and then San Francisco, then Miami. It barely makes my top 10. Transbay will change things considerably though.

Perhaps San Francisco is one of those skylines you have to see in person to get the full effect. I honestly was not too impressed with the viewpoint as one reaches the city from the Bay Bridge which its typically the most iconic and commercialized look. There is a view from the south though, as you approach the city on a freeway, that is just AMAZING. From this viewpoint, you see an expansive looming mass of buildings that is just jaw dropping. I would still rank SF's skyline as third over LA's. The skyline of Los Angeles is perhaps not that small either, but it presents itself as underwhelmingly small due to its vast suburban surroundings.

Does anyone have any good new pictures of Calgary that they could post? Canada's second best skyline could use some more representation here.

Calgary is a small city, only 1.4 million people, still has a long way to go to be represented here. It's one of the best skylines in the world for small cities (less than 2 million people).

However, Calgary is growing faster than other Canadian cities, so in 15-20 years, Calgary's skyline will compete with the best skylines here

Agree that Calgary is a tad too small to be on this thread but also that Montreal could give Calgary a good fight for 2nd best skyline in Canada.... as could Vancouver. Montreal's skyline is a little shorter than Calgary's but more expansive.

Perhaps some cities photograph better than others. You're right that LA's skyline is small relative to the huge expanse of suburbs but should that be a consideration? I've always found that LA's skyline gets under rated because people expect something bigger for a metro pushing 18 million. If people didn't know it was LA, they might rate it higher.

Hmm not sure if it a matter of a skyline being photogenic. Downtown Chicago and Toronto, like LA, sits amidst a wide expanse of suburbs. Yet the skylines of Chicago and Toronto look like they punch out of the plains while Los Angeles' gets somewhat lost perhaps because not only is it surrounded by lowrise suburbs but also because it is quite compact from most viewpoints.
