In that last NY photo, I like how the LIC skyline already stretches the skyline mass to the east.

Also, and I have no clue why I feel like it. But looking at pictures from NYC, and especially from the point of view of that last shot posted. It feels like Manhattan is small, and the skyline tiny, but I know it´s not. It all looks so compact, while being huge and dense. It doesnt really feel like 1 WTC and the ESB are almost 5km apart.

Both buildings stop at the roof and that gives one the best representation of the size of each. I make exceptions for spires like one sees on the Chrysler Building.

We'll have to agree to disagree.
It is Ok to disagree. However, to counter your argument, there is very distinct difference between self supported towers like the CN Tower and mast telecommunication antennae like the the KVLY-TV antenna in South Dakota. The CTBUH makes a specific distinction between these two types of structures since the first one is self supported and the later is not (the guyed steel lattice mast type antennae are assisted by tension wires). This is the reason why the CN Tower (553 meters) was the tallest freestanding tower in the world and the KVKY-TV antenna (628.8 meters) was not.

CN Tower (self supported)

KVLY-TV Mast (not self supported)

This is very similar to the antennae above the Sears Tower and the FCP building. They are different from an architectural perspective as well as from a structural point of view.

Interestingly, the antenna above NYC's WTC1 is assisted by tension cables so I think the CTBUH shot themselves in the foot by making it count towards architectural height.

There might be a difference, but I just don't see how antennae ever really add to the architectural drama of skyscrapers. Personally I find it much easier to just go by roof height.

I hate to wade into the spire/roof debate, but I'm glad you made these points. I'll just add that the CTBUH's most widely-used criteria hinges on the intended purpose of the structure, which adds some fuzziness to the equation....

Quote:
1. Height to Architectural Top
Height is measured from the level1 of the lowest, significant,2 open-air,3 pedestrian4 entrance to the architectural top of the building, including spires, but not including antennae, signage, flag poles or other functional-technical equipment.5 This measurement is the most widely utilized and is employed to define the CTBUH rankings of the "World's Tallest Buildings."

So if the structure is intended to be an architectural/aesthetic component, then it counts -- but if it's there purely for utility, it doesn't. That's why we measure the architectural height of the Empire State Building to the top of the original 1250' spire, and don't count the antenna that extends to 1454' (although the 1454' height would be used in the less-common "height to tip" category).

I am curious about whether you consider the antenna above NYC's WTC1 to add any architectural character to the building?
