What the **** is so bad about having old buildings!? I just don't understand it! I would take an old New York building over a modern building any day of the week! I'm sick of this old=crappy bullshit, give me a break!

ditto, I much prefer the old buildings in NYC to the new. Every time im in Manhattan im blown away by the amount of detail and ornamentation on the older buildings. They just dont build them like the used to

It's sad, I know. They just don't get their due respect which is what really ticks me off. To most of these modernist freakoids if it's not glass, it's trash.

In terms of architectural variety, many European cities beat their American counterparts.

In low rise buildings, perhaps, but I don't know about high rises, our focus of debate, which is what actually makes up the skyline. I don't know that European cities can keep up.

European cities have some interesting highrise skyscrapers. La Defense and Canary Wharf are some examples of skyscrapers meeting large public spaces. Interestingly they're from very different eras.

Heres a news flash for you... the topic of conversation was of HIGH rises. The point was that while new tall skyscraper cities like Hongkong may have nice new high rises cities like NYC will always have the old high rises.

That one I agree. HK's to me has a better skyline than NY but NY is better overall!

That doesn't make any sense, you're contradicting yourself.

What I meant is New York is better than HK in overall aspects including economy, importance, cultural influence, etc. But if we're only talking about skyline, I'll still prefer HK over NY

Hong Kong is easily the most imposing skyline in the world. New York is great as well, with the WTC i would say equal to HK, but without them, HK is a notch above NY. Chicago also has a very good skyline.

But even if NY still has the WTC, it can't match HK. New York does not have the quantity of high-rises that HK has. Also, HK may not have the iconic collection that NY has but the city still has a good collection of post modern scrapers.

My measure of a great skyline is based on several factors. That's height, quantity, density, presentation, organization and of course quality. While Chicago's skyline has height, quality, organization and presentation, it lacks quantity and density that HK and NY have.

HK and NY have all of these categories. HK may not have the collection that NY and Chicago have but it can make up for it's world class contemporary architecture with iconic scrapers like The BoC, HSBC Building, Lippo Centre, The 2-IFC and more.

So the ranking is,

1) Hong Kong
2) New York
3) Chicago
