NYC
Hong Kong
shanghai
chicago

nothing else comes close...
the rest are massive, ok, but we are not talking about density... many asian skylines are massive but lacks the character you see in seattle, singapore, sydney and toronto...

I tend to flip flop as with regards to Shanghai and New York. In some regards, Shanghai's skyline is more impressive, but the layering in New York is just phenomenal. I am partial to the north American street grid, but Shanghai will probably end up my #1 eventually.

P.S. I like the Shanghai Tower.

yeah, shanghai's skyline is really impressive, and it keeps getting better. but here's the thing: once the new WTC is finished (1 and 4WTC by 2012/13, 2 and 3WTC by 2014/15), the NY skyline will get a new focal point. and believe me, many people who don't even have NY in their top 3 will probably put it as no.1. i myself think that it will look amazing, because right now the lower manhattan skyline is pretty flat.

also, i fear that HK is losing ground as we don't have a single skyscraper (NWC is under prep.) or supertall presently U/C.

You're obviously just a basher who has bad reputation on SSC for being a troll anyway all the cities you have mentioned are not English speaking cities except SF so i don't think i can live in a total foreign city.

I'm a sucker for 1900-1940 skyscrapers, so cities that have them will always score a few more points with me. You're right about all that development in lower Manhattan. It will make a huge difference, but I have New York in #1 spot already so New York will probably stay there for the next few years at least.

I know you're a Hong Konger, but do you have it ahead of Shanghai?

A little off topic, but what do you think about Minneapolis, London, and Mumbai. I try to familiarize myself with cities beyond the big skyscraper cities, and I find those ones quite interesting for different reasons.

Minny: the quality is just fabulous, but it's really not that big.
London: it's really starting to come together.
Mumbai: has a long way to go, but looks like it's destined to become one of the best one day.

to be honest, i don't know anything about minneapolis so i guess i'll have to inform myself.

with london on the other hand i'm quite familiar, shard and pinnacle being the main towers i'm watching here and there.

and yes, mumbai is starting off like a rocket! so many supertalls popping up that it's really hard to keep track of.

from CTBUH, supertalls U/C

1. India Tower 720m
2. Orchid Crown Tower A 337m
2. Orchid Crown Tower B 337m
2. Orchid Crown Tower C 337m
5. Orchid Heights 1 328m
5. Orchid Heights 2 328m
7. Palais Royale 320m

And how exactly is this relevant to a "World's Best Skyline" thread?

If a billionaire decided to build a city with no people, just well lit, well constructed and architecturally superb buildings, I would have no qualms in listing it #1 in a World's Best Skyline even though it had no 'population'.

Just in terms of skyline, this is very plausible.

The Queen's Necklace and Marine Drive provide a fantastic panoramic platform for visually stunning skyscrapers to create a brilliant skyline.

There can certainly be height, but what remains to be seen is quality.

Hong Kong's residentials and general buildings may not be up to much, but it's office block skyscrapers are stunners.

More quality and consideration, less height.

Height isn't AS important a factor - as Singapore continues to show (and, for me at least, Dubai proves the opposite).

That proposal to build that close to 300m tower on the TST waterfront - it's got height and will definitely make an impact, but will it make a GOOD impact?

I don't see a tower that close to the water, with everything else that surrounds it being minute in comparison, making a good impact on the skyline.

Now if they'd have built that same tower in CWB, for instance...

Because it is my choice and its based on my personal taste and preference
Hong Kong has good density and a couple of modern skyscrapers but most of it's buildings are just residential highrises and in fact i don't like it's lighting at night (it looks cheap rather than chic) IMO! But hey, it's skyline is definitely one of the best in the whole world, for sure
