honestly prior to their expansion in the 90s ... no one in uk really knew about HSBC ... and it was pretty much a local hk bank runned by scots for like 100 years before they made the decision to be the world's local bank and started their expansion to become world's second largest financial institution by capitalization ... quite successful indeed ...
and you could see the symbol of HSBC pretty much in every city you go ...
HK was their single largest market for many years ...
but its significance has decreased a lot these last few years when they keep on acquiring foreign institution ...
hk the city only contribute to 1/4 of its earning now ... which was like 1/3 four years ago ...
theres too much risk of just staying in hk ...
and the market is too small ...

HSBC in hk has kept its original name and is still called hong kong bank ... which is under is parent company HSBC holding ... i have heard its chairman would be chinese when Elton quits in hk ... this is due to their expansion in china i believe
HSBC went through 4 buildings in hk ... my favorite one is the one in the neo classical style built in late 19th century ... very beautiful ... located in the same site as the foster one ...

Up to the early 1990s, HSBC was known as the Hongkong Bank (short for the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation). Since its major acquisition in the UK (Midland Bank) and subsequent expansions worldwide, a global common branding was adopted, and the short-form HSBC became standardized worldwide. In fact, I myself heard some British tour guides still using the Hongkong Bank when I visited London in December.

Currently, HSBC's major control centers are London, Hong Kong, Paris, and New York. The 3 key regions are Britain, Asia Pacific centered from Hong Kong, and the US unit (Marine Midland Bank from Buffalo and Household).

I've been wondering this for a while, is there a link between HSBC and Swire Group because both there logos are extremely relative. I'm too stupid to post picturs but google Swire and HSBC and you'll see what I mean. Anyone have the answer?

HSBC Buildings of the World

With its headquarters in London, HSBC is one of the largest banking and financial services organisations in the world. HSBC's international network comprises over 9,800 offices in 77 countries. They also own the naming rights to at least 30 skyscrapers around the world.

I can’t think of any other company that owns so many buildings around the world? So here are the 5 tallest HSBC buildings (I’ll ad more later). Feel free to add extra pics, interesting info or comments on the buildings.

SSP diagram of HSBC buildings

Enjoy!

Great idea for a thread! I especially like the HSBC buildings in Shanghai & Canary Wharf (the HQ.)

Another bank with quite a few beautiful and tall buildings is the Bank of America in the States.

Buffalo, New York

HSBC's presence in the United States used to be concentrated in Marine Midland Bank based in Buffalo. HSBC has since grown significantly following several major acquisitions and is now listed on the NYSE.

London HSBC HQ looks like an anonymous scraper somewhere in China.
