The USA doesn't want to switch because all the grandmas and grandpas along with a bunch of younger pro-war anti-abortion folks will be upset

No, it's because you smug arrogant Eurotrash think you can come in here and tell us what to do, after we saved your behinds in WWII!

YES, I am being very sarcastic.

Oh, really? You didn't save my ass because I am in fact half-German and half-Russian. The earlier got their butts kicked by the Allies, and the latter themselves "liberated" almost entire Europe. You, Yanks, showed up just in time to stop Soviets from "liberating" the rest of Europe (West of River Elbe)

And as for the system of measurements, I use the one the US Custom system is itself defined by.

What I don't like in North America is the textual signs. It is easy to miss those totally So many things here are textual. For example, it is easy to miss those "Right lane must exist" signs, having to turn right if you don't move to the left in time. But there are many more examples.

I have seen some metric signs close to the Canadian border in Idaho. I also saw a few french/english signs in Idaho for that matter, too

That sounds a bit metaphysical

It is a semi-contraction of 'AsSOCiation Football' (emphasis added). Remember that 'FIFA' is an acronym for (pardons if my French speling is off): 'Federation International des Football Association'.

Canadians and USAians like to call it 'Soccer' to differentiate it from the kind of 'football' played by the CFL and NFL.

Go and tell the Aussies that...

And the retard was some English dude who wanted to differentiate between association football and rugby football. The rest of England though that sounded way too posh, but it worked well in the colonies (both contemporary and former).

Once again proving why American English is the best form of English (to start yet ANOTHER fight between the US and Europe)

Because it originally was played by kicking the ball around. It later evolved into the sport you see today.

Football, American Football, Rugby and Aussie Rules are all cousins...they all came from the same sporting-tree.

Yep.

"Rugby' football is descended from 'Association' football (what the Canadians and we USAians call 'soccer') and, in turn, 'American' football is descended from Rugby.

^ Which all started with some idiot picking up the ball and running with it during a soccer (then football) game.

But back to the thread, which I thought was about metric in the US. I am very interested why the US did not follow-through with plans to go metric in the 1970's. (Seriously doubt it has much to do with abortion)...

Yes, it would bring the US to standard with most of the civilized world, but if "ain't broke, why fix it?"...

Hey, it's pretty easy to figure your driving time with MPH, afterall!

By the way, Washington DOT is one of the few that is not converting back to English units.
