Do German Länder have different designs? Never noticed that.

There are some slight differences, but if you don't pay attention to it, you won't notice it.

@ Alex: I just take Google Search, Google Earth and AARoads for getting informations, so of course sometimes it can be a strange result (coz I have just been to Arizona, NYC, WashDC and Orlando) and I think I found out that Ophir is a small town somewhere in that area (driving north after leaving the highway) close to the highway (and was pretty popular about 150 years ago the only reason I took it is that I'd need a name for the exit, so I have chosen this "Ophir" because closest town Newcastle already has the next exit. Maybe I should call it "Lincoln-East" so there'd be no more need of Ophir do you understand what i mean?)

@ Kampflamm:

There's only a difference between Hessen and the rest of Teutonia.
In Hessen, the signs are usually as wide as the lanes considering the sign are. The arrows are always in the middle of the lane (That's the reason why there's no arrow in the Vorwegweiser, because there's no lane yet) and on overhead signs, long and mixed arrows are usually not used. On signs wider than one lane, the longest destination name is centered and the rest is leftaligned to the centered one (what I find easier to read if you start reading each line at the same position, on all-centered signs your eyes have to do zigzags), and they usually don't put more than one destination in one line what makes it also easier to read IMO. And the use of Engschrift is quite rare.

you can see the difference here:

each exit has its own name so we wouldn't say "get off at where it says blah" just get off at for example "elkton/newark" or "newark-south" or "newark-east" or whatever the 3 names would be.

here are the german rules:

1. announce of the exit: only distance/number/name of the exit

2. "pre-direction sign": only distance/road numbers/destinations (can also be overhead of course)

then you have three of so called "baken" giving the distance till the begin of the slow-down-lane for the exit. the exit number appears again on the 300m-bake, but not on the 200m and 100m bake

3. direction sign when the slow-down-lane begins: destinations (can be overhead of course, too)

4. distance sign after the exit

the thing with the round shape of the state's route is that this sign i edited is located in new jersey, and the connected road (439) is a ring road around elizabeth, nj. i know that each state has it's own state route number design
Everything makes more sense now. From the original photoshops, it gave the impression that exit numbers weren't used at all. Showing the grand scheme of things clears everything up.

Dude, you're pretty awesome doing so crazy stuff.

Just look at the different spacings and thicknesses of the characters on that austrian sign. That's not professional. There should be only ONE font and one size you use on every sign.

Some people just don't appreciate art. German signs are clean and beautiful.

is he from columbus, ohio? maybe i should edit some signs from there

first intention of this thread was just fun, so don't take this too seriously (although it's true that some american signs are horrible,
and even in glorious Germany (), I just wanna run away when I see this sign for example (found by rohne):

But every country has its own styles)

Well, I am being very serious when I say that I would like you to work for the Federal DOT. That fella from Columbus, Ohio obviosuly has very little experience with countries outside of the USA. To be fair, I should say that this narrow mindness displayed by Paddington can be seen in other countries as well.

now i tried it with the windows lucida sans unicode font, that i think resembles to the new clearviewhwy font (at least a little bit)

(maybe i could cut out cleveland and pittsburgh until we reach columbus coming from cincinnati)

if you wanna know why the arrows here face upwards:

if you lay down the sign on the street, you'll see that the arrow will face forward. downwarded arrows would face backwards following this rule. and that's also the reason of how the destinations are sorted. farest destination (or interchange/exit you need to take to get there) away on top, nearest at the bottom.

ok, i see now, i have to change columbus and pittsburgh on my sign

The signs would look better if you save them in the PNG format.
