@Prometheus
Thanks for your thread and comments filarako. I wish I could write more right now but I am busy and not exactly in the mood for writing. In addition, I am VERY WORRIED about the outcome of the war in Iraq and since I have a tendency to think a lot and make connections, I tend to be unhappy all the time... I believe that if we attempt a careful reading of the book of the Apocalypse, we will get chills in our spines with certain "coincidences" between what's happening around us and what's written there. But let's not write anything about it, not right now, It's Friday night and I better go out for a couple of drinks, I need it. Also, I think that it would be better, if we are to converse in Greek, to open a thread in the "Domus Ludicrous Maximus" and do it there. Stephan (i.e. De Snor, a.k.a. "Le Grand Moustache") was kind enough to open this thread in this prominent position so that we can present news about the upcoming Athens 2004 Summer Olympics. Thus far, all of us but mostly you and Nessuno, have presented some very interesting things bout the subject, although if there were more Greeks around, this thread would be some 15 pages now. Nevertheless, I believe that it was my mistake about starting writing in Greek in this particular thread. This thread had some 700+ hits at the time of this writing which makes it a matter of global importance as far as the community of this forum is concerned. Again, thanks for all your contributions guys, it's good to be among ones with the same beliefs with regards to certain things... @ Monkey Thanks for your nice comments dear friend. Even in a state of "mild depression" in my case, I try to contribute to this forum which is a life-saver for me. However, I believe that Prometheus and Nessuno deserve many accolades for their contributions too. They have been more active than me during the last months, so... Again, I may write something about the latest developments in Athens in the near future. Not a long one but just to keep this community updated with the latest developments.

Olympics are a great thing for Greece, no matter what the cost. And my hope is.....Athens 2004, Belgrade 2020. I think we could do it

I agree with you CrazyS
Belgrade can definitely host the Olympic games, maybe earlier than 2020. If, that is, there has not been a nuclear war till then...

Thanks guys. Just trying to give in my two cents. Gregory, I agree we should limit the Greek on this thread.
@CrazySerb Nothing would fill my heart more with joy than to see Beograd host the Olympic games. Poor city. It's seen so much turmoil and violence in the last 15 years. I for one have faith in the Serbian people and their ability to prosper now that the worst (!) is behind them, and Beograd will be the jewel of the central Balkans imho. By the way, I very much like reading your threads, though more often than not the pictures don't show up.

Didn't we have a thread on the Rio-Antirio Bridge some while back? I believe so ... (darn search function). I remember the pictures in that thread, and if it's the same bridge, enormous progress has been made.

Actually, even I couldn't foresee the appeal that this thread would have to our forum's international audience. Speaking in Greek all the time would not be appropriate since there may be certain things that are of interest to the forumers. I certainly thank everybody for their appreciation of the Greek language as one of the mothers of European languages (along with Latin of course). I believe though that even the small number of Greeks here wouldn't justify many threads in this language. If we have anything to say in Greek, we can go to the "Domus" section and open a thread - I reckon no-one would be bothered.
the only thing that I miss is that it comes more naturar to me to bash the bad aspects of Greece using my native tongue and "lay off some steam". Anyway, things are progressing rapidly with regards to the Olympics. But more on this, soon. I had to prepare this thread about Istanbul (click on link to access it), since I had promised it to my Turkish friends, Especially Asim, Kerem and Anil from wowTURKEY.com and after they recommended that I can use their site to store my pics, I started to work on this... Now, I will do some work on Athens and Greece ![]() OK, talk to you later.

Some intresting news
ATHENS 2004 Volunteer Programme is progressing rapidly
Athens, 7 April 2003 The Volunteerism Selection Programme officially launched on 30 January 2003 is continuing successfully, with personal interviews carried out in order to select and place volunteers in appropriate positions according to the Olympic and Paralympic Games requirements and to the candidates’ preferences. 3.250 candidate volunteers were interviewed by the end of March, while the number of candidates interviewed will exceed 4,000 in April. During the coming months the number of volunteers will increase in accordance to the intensity of the pace of preparations. The Volunteer Programme primarily aims at the selection and training of volunteers for their participation in the 2003 Test Events. Submitted volunteer applications are increasing, the total number of applications submitted as at 3 April 2003 were 68,726. It is reminded that only the Official Volunteer Application, which was issued on 30th January 2002, can be submitted to the ATHENS 2004. Anyone who wishes to contribute as volunteer to the organisation of the Athens Olympic and Paralympic Games must complete the application form and send it to ATHENS 2004. They may directly communicate with the Volunteer Toll Free Line in Greece on 800 11 2004 1 and ask for the official Application form or complete the application online on the ATHENS 2004 official website, www.athens2004.com Within 60 days of receipt of the Application form, the ATHENS 2004 Volunteerism Department reassures the candidate volunteer that their Application has been received and provides him/her with a code number. If this period passes and the applicant has not been notified by ATHENS 2004 (via regular or electronic mail) then they are requested to communicate with the Volunteer Telephone Centre in order to register missing data. It is noted that the submission of the official Volunteer Application is necessary for all those who completed the ATHENS 2004 Volunteerism Expression of Interest form before 30 January 2002and who have not been notified by ATHENS 2004 either via regular or electronic mail because of changes in the data registered on the form. Volunteer Telephone Centre 800 11 2004 1 (toll free in Greece) Hours of Operation: Monday – Friday 8:30-21:00 and Saturday 10:00-14:00. |

Again, thanks for the information Ness. Indeed the recruitment process (I have been a professional consultant recruiter in the past) will be of unprecedented scale in the history of Greece.
Looks like the games enter the final line. I hope for the best, too much effort has been made already. I hope the roads will finish soon though. I mean Messogeion is already a soup of cars and now they will demolish the old bridge of Stavros Aghias Paraskevis in order to complete an ultrasonic Attiki Odos three level junction. Fine but untill it is completed (end of 2003)... KOLASI , that's HELL in GREEK

Mekky, the Athens tram is currently under construction, (which means that we're experiencing a chaotic situation in Posedonos Av.
)I saw the gantt chart of the construction company and it is estimated to be finished by May 2004. May 2004 is a milestone date for Greece All projects conserning Olympiad (including test events) should have been finished and we're having elections too ![]() As for the tram, the only pic ever published is this: ![]() Here is a map of the 2 lines:
