In North Carolina’s Triangle, the Passage of a Sales Tax Increase in Durham is Just the First Step





A 30-year plan to bring increased bus service and three new rail lines to the Research Triangle gets off to a promising start with an election in Durham.

In 2000, North Carolina’s two largest metropolitan regions each planned big transit improvements, and each had received preliminary approval to do so from the Federal Transit Administration.The Triangle’s leaders wanted to build a diesel multiple unit-powered regional rail line connecting Durham and Raleigh while Charlotte’s elected officials planned an electric light rail line linking downtown with its southern suburbs.

Ten years later, Charlotte’s Blue Line has been up and running for almost four years, attracting higher than expected ridership. The Triangle’s efforts were flummoxed in November 2005 by an FTA ruling that the regional rail project was not cost effective, and the project was cancelled.

Yet the passage yesterday of a half-cent sales tax increase dedicated to transit in Durham County offers strong evidence that the region’s electorate is ready to invest in new public transportation options — the referendum passed with a large 60% majority in approval. Durham’s endorsement of the transit improvement program, like similar efforts in cities from Los Angeles to Denver, provides clear evidence that voters are willing and even excited to pay higher taxes in exchange for tangible improvements in transportation.* If in the U.S. Congress future funding for mobility remains tenuous at best, local level support for such policies is clear.

For the Triangle, this is the first step towards the completion of what will not only be a vast upgrade over current transit offerings in the region but also a significant improvement on the 2000 regional rail plan...

Looks like a step in the right direction. Still no plan to integrate RDU International Airport, and that just kills me. Such an easy thing to include... You'd think the business tourists that enter RDU would find the bus ride to the first train station a bit quaint.

A Triangle developer has added a high-rise apartment building to plans for the Edison, an ambitious downtown project showing signs of life after a recession-induced slumber.

The glass-and-steel tower will make a bold addition to Raleigh's skyline, Gregg Sandreuter told City Council members this morning at a Budget & Economic Development Committee meeting.

At 20 to 22 stories high, the 320-unit building will anchor a portion of the northern end of the Edison site, which will eventually encompass most of the downtown block bounded by Blount, Davis, Wilmington and Martin streets.
"It's a pretty exciting project if he can pull it off," City Manager Russell Allen told council members.

Finally, some relatively good news about the Edison. Last year, it was significantly scaled down from its original plan, with a portion of the block proposed to be six-story apartments:

But now, I think we're all excited about news that something larger could be underway! With Red Hat moving their headquarters downtown, there will certainly be increased residential demand. Hopefully there will be a domino effect, attracting more people and businesses downtown.

Summit Hospitality Group plans a Residence Inn by Marriott, an addition that supporters say will add much-needed hotel rooms to the city’s revitalized downtown..

Summit envisions an 11-story hotel with 140 to 154 rooms, restaurant and retail space on the first floor, a rooftop terrace and parking in a nearby city deck, according to documents submitted to the city.

A lot of downtown/skyline advocates are pissed about this. The design is worthless and the height is woeful for such a prominent downtown site.

Yeah, we're getting something dumpy like that in Nashville too from White Lodging... it's a Hyatt Place. I hope that yours is not the same color as in that rendering... that's horrible!
