Are they extending the Skytrain from On Nut to Svarnabhumi? I think they should.

Opening of Bangkok's new airport delayed until end of year

BANGKOK, April 3, 2006 (AFP) - Construction problems have pushed back the opening of Bangkok's new international Suvarnabhumi Airport until the end of the year, a senior transport official said Monday, further dimming Thailand's hopes of becoming Southeast Asia's aviation hub.

"We are not able to open Suvarnabhumi Airport ... as planned in June or July," deputy transport minister General Chainant Chareonsiri told AFP.

"We cannot say exactly when it will be opened but let's say November or December are most likely," he said.

The airport, whose name means "golden land", has been planned for more than 40 years and was variously scheduled to open in 1990, 2000 and last September 29. A high-speed train line linking it with the city is at least two years away.

Suvarnabhumi is meant to surpass regional rivals Singapore and Malaysia but the world civil aviation body has yet to approve the project.

Officials from an international aviation group say the facility -- which was partially opened amid much fanfare in September -- needs more time to run tests, according to Chainant.

He said unfinished construction and staffing problems dog the airport, which is expected to handle 45 million passengers annually, against the 38 million at the existing Don Muang airport to the capital's north.

Nahhh.. Mosaic

BTS Skytrain will be extended from On Nut to Sam Rong - Samut Prakarn, not Suvarnabhumi Airport.
