Thai official pleads with sightseers to stop visiting Bangkok's new airport
2 October 2006

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) - Litter is piling up in the bathrooms at Bangkok's sleek new international airport. There aren't enough toilets and there's too much picnicking going on. The root of the problem? Too many sightseers.

On top of the 80,000-90,000 travelers passing through Suvarnabhumi Airport each day, more than 100,000 Thais are visiting and snapping souvenir pictures at the new airport, which opened Thursday, said Chotisak Asapaviriya, president of Airports of Thailand.

"So many people are coming for sightseeing, and we're pleading with them to stop. There are too many," Chotisak said. "There aren't enough bathrooms. People are complaining that there's litter all over the bathrooms. They're eating here and there, parking their cars in a mess."

He said the sightseers were coming in droves, in pickup trucks, bringing packed lunches to eat at Suvarnabhumi as they take pictures inside the modern, airy building.

As a result, Suvarnabhumi -- built to hold 45 million passengers per year -- has been inundated with people who have no travel plans at all.

"I don't want to chase them out because this is public property, and we're all excited about it, but it has made it difficult to work," Chotisak said in a telephone interview.

Airports of Thailand had welcomed visitors to Suvarnabhumi prior to its opening so that travelers could figure out where it was and not get lost en route to the facility once it opened. But Chotisak said the visiting period was now over.

"Please don't come visit and take pictures," he said. "We built this (airport) to accommodate travelers."

"We invited (visitors) so that they could familiarize themselves with the new airport, but now it's no longer familiarization -- it has become a picnic."

Yep. in fact, the scene is from Hindu mythology, and is called "Churning of the Oceans."

Thats Shiva in the center, and the Gods and Demons are on either side, churning for the elixer.

Noise pollution pay-out for neighbours of new Thai airport

BANGKOK, Oct 6, 2006 (AFP) - Residents living near Bangkok's new international airport will get compensation for noise pollution and could be re-homed away from the roar of jets, airport officials said Friday.

Somchai Sawasdeepon, general manager of the new Suvarnabhumi airport, said that officials met on Thursday and agreed to allocate a sum of the airport's development budget to compensate 200 households living near the airport.

They also endorsed a sum of 214 million baht (5.7 million dollars) compensation for King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, which has complained about the roar of overhead planes.

"A certain amount will be paid for residents nearby the airport to relieve the immediate impact noise has caused them," Somchai told AFP.

"We are also considering another amount to buy properties for those who cannot bear the noise pollution and want to move away from the new airport."

Airports of Thailand (AoT) has hired the National Institute of Development Administration to conduct a study on noise pollution caused by air traffic in and out of Suvarnabhumi. The study will be completed by the end of this month.

"Nearby residents where the noise exceeds 75 decibels are considered 'significantly affected'," AoT's president Chotisak Aspaviriya told AFP.

"Those, of which the number is less than 100, would be priority to get compensation, especially if they want to move out from their current homes."

Thailand's pollution control department says that noise above 70 decibels can lead to premature hearing loss and urged residents living near the runways to move.

"Noise exceeding that standard level must be avoided," an official at the department said, on condition of anonymity.

"We have suggested that those living about one kilometre (0.6 miles) away from the runways, where the effects are significant, move out of their existing homes," the official told AFP.

Located 3.5 kilometres (two miles) from Suvarnabhumi, the King Mongkut Institute said that 14,000 students had been affected since the new airport opened on September 28.

Five residents living near the new airport have already filed complaints to the police to speed up the compensation claims.

"Those residents have been in contact with the airport officials, but so far the process of giving compensation is very slow," said a police officer at Lad Krabang police station in Bangkok.

Suvarnabhumi or 'Golden Land' airport, 25 kilometres (15 miles) east of the Thai capital, has a capacity of 45 million passengers a year, beating regional rivals in Singapore and Malaysia. The airport can handle up to 76 flights per hour.
