AOT planning two economy lounges

The Nation Published on December 7, 2009

Airports of Thailand (AOT) plans to invite private investors to build two economy lounges at Suvarnabhumi Airport next year. "Economy-class passengers and those who travel with low-cost airlines want to be comfortable if |they have to wait a number of |hours for their flights. So the company would like to have that ser-|vice at Suvarnabhumi," AOT president Serirat Prasutanond said last week.

The lounges are planned for the eastern and western sides of the terminal and each will cover 200 square metres.

Serirat said the company would invite outside investors to submit their formal interest in the concession next year.

He added that each lounge would provide drinks, bathrooms and other personal facilities.

The operator will be allowed to charge no more than Bt500 per passenger per day for use of the lounges.

Most airlines already have |business and first-class lounges.

Serirat said AOT would also introduce automated check-in machines at the airport for added passenger convenience.

AOT expects the number of passengers using Suvarnabhumi will increase by 10 per cent next year, as many airlines plan to resume their Thai operations.

"The global economic situation is not likely to worsen, so international travel will rise again," said Serirat.

This year, the company has invested in information techno-|logy at Suvarnabhumi by adding |100 computers with free Wi-Fi Internet.

It also centralised luggage scanning into one location, while adding more fast-track lanes to serve business and premium passengers.

Moreover, it relocated the giant statues from the departure halls to the arrival halls, so that visitors can get a better feel of Thai culture and history before travelling in the Kingdom.

Airport Rail Link set to be in service mid-2010

BANGKOK, Dec 4 (TNA) – The 28-kilometre Airport Rail Link connecting Suvarnabhumi Airport with the city centre will be fully operational within the next six months, mid-2010, at the latest, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Friday.

Speaking after presiding over a special test run of the Airport Rail Link with members of his cabinet, Mr Abhisit said his transport minister Sophon Zarum has given assurances that the Airport Rail Link's commercial service could be in operation as early as March or mid-2010 at latest.

The premier and his Cabinet also witnessed a test of the baggage check-in system at Makkasan Station in downtown Bangkok as well as ticketing from an automatic ticket-selling machine before boarding an Express Service train to Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Mr Abhisit said the development of the Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail Link and City Air Terminal Project (SARL) is in line with the government’s policy to develop the city’s communication and transportation system so as to link Bangkok’s main areas to Suvarnabhumi Airport.

He said that SARL will also develop the railway system, which helps ease heavily congested traffic in the capital and adjacent areas and raise the people’s quality of life.

After the special run was completed, many commuters asked for more tickets for free rides. State Railway of Thailand (SRT) announced that free tickets for other test runs will be available on Saturday through Tuesday (December 5-7).

The 28-km rail link connects Suvarnabhumi Airport in adjacent Samut Prakan province and the City Air Terminal (CAT) in Bangkok’s Makkasan area, where passengers will be able to check in their baggage.

Both services of the Express Service and the City Line will be operated on the same tracks at speeds of up to 160km per hour. The Express Service is a 15-minute non-stop journey between the CAT and the airport with a fare at Bt150 per trip.

At Makkasan Station, 28 check-in counters will be in service, with four counters reserved for large baggage. The baggage transfer system will be capable of taking up to 300 pieces per hour.

City Line commuter trips, with fares at Bt15-45, will take 30 minutes to reach the airport, departing from Phaya Thai, Ratchaprarop, Makkasan, Asoke, Ramkhamhaeng, Hua Mak, Ban Thap Chang, and Lat Krabang stations, and will end at the last stop of Suvarnabhumi.

SRT expects to serve up to 50,000 commuters daily. According to State Railway of Thailand (SRT), Yutthana Thapcharoen, the airport link’s full-scale commercial operations are expected in April next year if independent engineers can certify all rail equipment within three months. If not, full service may be postponed to August. The SRT is now seeking a subsidiary company for train operations’ management during the first phase of service. (TNA)

Airport finds luggage theft a tough nut

Bangkokpost Published: 8/12/2009 at 12:00 AM

Suvarnabhumi airport authorities are admitting the theft of passengers' luggage is too difficult to eradicate completely despite tightened security measures.

Airport deputy director for operations Narongchai Tanadchangsaeng said even though security measures had been stepped up, officials could not completely control the luggage-handling service because some of it was outsourced and the rest was dealt with by airline staff.

Airport authorities recently organised a seminar with representatives of the companies providing ground services at the airport to exchange information and institute improved security measures. The companies included Thai Airways International, Bangkok Airways, Thai Airports Ground Services Co and Bangkok Flight Services Co.

Itthipol Boon-aree, head of security at Suvarnabhumi, said until an airport police force was set up, the companies involved in luggage handling would have to join forces to fight the problem.

He said part of the problem in the past was that each company worked separately and their officials did not know one another. The seminar gave them an understanding of the roles and duties of each company to help coordinate procedures to reduce the risk of theft.

Mr Itthipol said airport authorities had formed a temporary unit to take direct responsibility for reducing crime. It would cooperate with district police at the branch of the Racha Thewa station which is based inside the airport.

"As the stricter measures are being enforced, the number of thefts of passengers' luggage as well as illegal taxi drivers and guides has dropped substantially, but the problem will not disappear because these people come up with new tricks." Mr Itthipol said.

"Officials must maintain the strict measures and monitor movements closely," he said.

Suvarnabhumi authorities are now searching luggage-handling staff and have banned them from wearing clothing with pockets or carrying mobile phones while on duty.
