True, and in SE Asia I think it has the most number of airline served, in terms of its variety. Not even SIN has El Al, Norwegian, LOT, Kenya, and of course the numerous Russian ones.
It truly benefits from Thailand's well-established tourism industry and its strategic central position connecting Europe & Africa with East Asia.

Bangkok has always been a much better plane spotting airport than Singapore or KL. The political issues in recent years may have rubbed off a bit of the lustre, but you will find some unique birds at BKK (not so much at DMK though)!

It's amazing how "Indian" sounding a lot of Thai names are. Case in point, 'Suvarnabhumi', meaning, 'land of gold', in Hindi/Sanskrit.

Yes, Thais accept Indian culture with Buddhism for thousand years ago. Most of Thai people's names and surname are the combination between Bali, Sanskrit, Thai and Khmer words.

Budget airlines keep Thai airports on growth trajectory
Excerpt

By Khettiya Jittapong BANGKOK, Feb 6 (Reuters) - Air traffic at Thailand's six main airports run by Airports of Thailand climbed to a record last year, boosted by aggressive expansion at budget airlines that were unfazed by a political crisis and a shortage of airport capacity.

Total passenger numbers rose 2.5 percent to 90.53 million in 2014, with low-cost carriers - which focus primarily on domestic travel - accounting for nearly 40 percent of the total, up from less than 10 percent a decade ago.

Budget airlines such as Thai AirAsia and Nok Airlines Pcl are building up fleets and stepping up fare competition, which has drawn out domestic travellers. Business was also buoyed by foreign travellers avoiding Bangkok's political troubles and heading instead to the provinces. Domestic traffic at AOT's airports grew at a brisk 16 percent pace last year even as international traffic dipped 5.6 percent.

AOT plans to expand its capacity at its three largest airports by an average of 53 percent over the next four years to ease capacity bottlenecks and reap the rise in traffic. Optimism about its prospects boosted its shares to a record high of 333 baht on Feb. 3 and they are up 68 percent since the May coup, compared with a 17 percent rise in Bangkok's benchmark SET index .

On top of the augmented expansion of the airport approved last month , Phase 2 of Suvarnabhumi Airport also got the green light.

The augmented expansion approved last month consist of:
- the construction of a new passenger terminal that will be able to handle 20 million passengers a year
- a third runway that would initially measure 2,900m in length but later will be extended to 3,700m

The above are expected to be completed by 2019 and will increase Suvarnabhumi's capacity to 70 million passengers a year.

Phase 2 (which was approved last week) includes:
- the construction of a satellite passenger terminal capable of accommodating 28 jetliners including eight the size of A380 superjumbos
- the extension of the main terminal's eastern wing
- the construction of an airline office building and eastern car park
- the construction of an automated people mover system linking the satellite terminal to the main terminal

Phase 2 is expected to be completed by 2020 and will increase Suvarnabhumi's capacity to 85 million passengers a year.

Suvarnabhumi ready for take-off

The long-overdue expansion of Suvarnabhumi airport, which was delayed for scrutiny after last year's May 22 coup, is now back on track. The Airports of Thailand Plc (AoT) board on Wednesday agreed to revive the phase two expansion that was supposed to be undertaken soon after the airport opened in September 2006. The expansion will be on top of the capacity upgrade planned in August.

It means the state-controlled airport operator will carry out both expansion projects, which once completed in 2020 will launch Suvarnabhumi into the world's league of mega airports with a capacity to...

Suvarnahbumi's expansion has been one of the largest victims of Thailand's political instability. I'm really hoping that they will finally carry out these expansion plans after a so long overdue.
