Warnings of fire or propaganda ?

every year we here that " It's going to be a bad fire season " , even before 03.
Yesterday while out at Scotch Creek I hear this on the radio again . Dont get me wrong , Fire's are something that we all have to be care full of, but
sometimes I think the warnings are a little over board. What does every one else think ?

People will forget the importance of the message if it isn't promoted. Happens all the time when we lay off of promoting something so, even if it is a mild form of propaganda, it's hard to deny its usefulness.

I wouldn't call it propaganda, it's more like precautionary messages, similiar to anti-cigarette commericals/packagings. Forest fires cost BC tens to hundreds of millions of taxpayers money, & even more on property damage (driving insurance through the roof). Given that most damaging fires were started by people, they serve quite an important role to contain future costs.

I think the last few years have been especially bad for fires. Not a lot of precipitation... They are just being proactive.

The warnings don't really bother me. People forget how easily and quickly fires get out of control. If they can stop a few people from carelessly starting forest fires, then it's worth it. Aside from pot, forestry is BC's main industry and losing forested areas is not a great thing. People's lives in addition to tourism can also be affected, so it's a huge deal.

There is a strong need to remind peoiple of the constant possibilitiy of fires when in the country. I think the point was, is that they say it every year and people get desensitized to it. They know they will be told it every year and are almost starting to tune them out.

YAY! POST 1,000!

They are warnings, not propaganda. Anybody remember the thin shield of smoke over the city for four days last year coming from a fire 500 km north of the city? Anybody remember the dozens of fires (mostly caused by hobos) in Stanley Park and the forest fire at Cypress Mountain? Imagine seeing this as Cypress Mountain from Jericho Beach, Vancouver:

According to Global BCTV last week, there are currently 160 forest fires in the province and at the time it was broadcasted, forest fire fighting cost already topped $3 million. The fact is that when the ground is tinder dry and when there's fire fuel around, one drop of a cigarette or a plastic/glass bottle on it could start a fire.

where exactly is it tinder dry ? It has rained here ( king of Dry ) for 3 weeks in a row. But as far as fires go , I think anyone from Kamloops or Kelowna knows a thing or two about living with the smoke in the valley . I need a smoke ...
