they are still working on it but work is slow. I live in building next to souk and it is coming on nicely but cannot see being ready for February. the towers are very slow and limited traffic into/off site.

Thanks for the information, but since when has the deadline been February? From what I understand it will be completed in 2011.

the souk was due for completion in February, with the remainder being work in progress. this is looking unlikely but they seem to have as many people working on the souk as the rest of the site.

I would be very surprised to see the souk open to the public this year...considerable issues with the main contractor, the underground car park and financing....

That small building in the foreground kind of puts it to perspective.
Its almost been swallowed up by the central market development.

Aldar's January update

Abu Dhabi Central Market's first phase to open in Q3
Emirates Business 24/7

23 March 2010
The first phase of the Abu Dhabi Central Market project is 95 per cent complete and the market will open in the third quarter of 2010, said Reham Abdulla, Senior Leasing Manager, Central Market Project, Aldar Properties, while speaking to Emirates Business yesterday.

Aldar Properties said at a press conference that it has begun leasing shops inside the Emporium, which forms part of the second phase of the Central Market - a high-end, fully integrated, mixed-use redevelopment in the original commercial district in the heart of downtown Abu Dhabi. The anchor store at the Emporium will be House of Fraser, the chain's first store in the region, it said.

The project's first phase covers the traditional Arabian Souk, built over an area of 14,500 sq m. It will have 300 shops with areas ranging between 40 sq m and 50 sq m. Nearly 50 per cent of the shops have been leased to investors from the UAE and elsewhere, said Abdulla.

The second phase features the Emporium and a 59-storey office tower. About 60 per cent of this phase has been completed and it will be opened next year, she added.

The Emporium covers an area of 62,000 sq m, has 170 shops with areas of 80 sq m, 100 sq m, 2,000 sq m and 10,000 sq m. Billed as Abu Dhabi's high-fashion destination, the Emporium will house 150 chic boutiques offering a blend of local and international brands, and food and beverage outlets spread over eight levels of arcades.

The third phase is due for opening in 2012. This includes the 88-storey Domain residential tower - the tallest tower in Abu Dhabi city - of which 78 storeys have been built. Two 59-storey and 16-storey hotels also form part of the complex.

Abdulla said that Aldar has signed a 10-year renewable contract with Retail Arabia International to set up House of Fraser.

House of Fraser signs 10-year lease for Abu Dhabi store

Aldar Properties and Retail Arabia International announced on Monday they had signed a 10-year lease agreement that will see the development of the region’s first House of Fraser store at Central Market in Abu Dhabi.

House of Fraser will be the anchor store for Emporium, a fashion retail centre that will feature 150 chic boutiques as well as food and beverage outlets over eight floors, the companies said in a joint statement.

In addition to Emporium, Central Market will be home to a traditional Arabian Souk featuring three ultra-modern towers providing apartments, office space, and hotel accommodation.

Nabil Daud, managing director and CEO, Retail Arabia International, said: “The signing of House of Fraser for the Middle East marked a very important step for Retail Arabia International.

"It is with great excitement that we look to launching this iconic brand in Abu Dhabi as the anchor to the Emporium, Central Market."

"We believe that this mall will become a major shopping destination in Abu Dhabi," he added without giving details of when the mall would open.

Fred Douglas, director of leasing, Aldar Properties, added: “We are delighted to welcome House of Fraser to Emporium at Central Market, our high fashion destination. Aldar is committed to bringing world class retailers and unique concepts to our developments, and is looking to form strategic relationships with groups such as Retail Arabia International to achieve this.”

Last month, House of Fraser signed a franchise agreement with the aim of expanding into the Middle East market.

As well as Abu Dhabi, the agreement could see House of Fraser open stores in Cairo, Riyadh, Jeddah, Dhahran, Muscat and Doha.

true, but it will mean the re-opening of 3rd St through the development and the removal of hoardings that both reduce capacity currently.
The 5,000 space car park can only attract traffic to the area though!!
