Hottest day as mercury soars to 35.3
Hong Kong Standard
Saturday, August 04, 2007

The heatwave continued Friday with the temperature hitting 35.3 degrees Celsius - the highest registered so far this summer.

Senior scientific officer Ma Wai- man of the Hong Kong Observatory said the temperature was the ninth highest on record in Hong Kong.

The very hot weather warning, issued 10 days ago, remained in force Friday, and is expected to remain on Saturday.

"It's hard to predict when we'll cancel the very hot weather warning as various factors, such as wind conditions and humidity, may affect the weather," Ma said.

The highest recorded temperature in Hong Kong was 36.1 degrees Celsius - which occurred only twice, in August 1900 and August 1990.

Weather expert Johnny Chan Chung-leung, chair professor of applied physics at City University, said it is too early to say if global warming is to blame.

He said the government has not helped because of its failure to plan suitable ventilation in local buildings. However, he said the recent hot weather is the result of a strong sub-tropical high pressure system in the area.

The Home Affairs Department has decided to open nine temporary night shelters - from 10.30pm to 8am - for those seeking refuge.

"If the very hot weather warning remains in force after 4.30pm, the department will open nine temporary night heat shelters that night for those in need of refuge," a spokesman said.

No idea, I left ~5:30pm HK time back to the states.

The airport was closed for a while when a storm blew through. Good bye HK!

Hope to be back next year

HK braces for Pabuk
Hong Kong Standard
Thursday, August 09, 2007

Hong Kong was bracing itself early this morning for its first tropical cyclone this year as tropical storm Pabuk moved closer to the territory.

Squalls and thunderstorms lashed the territory last night following the hoisting of the No1 standby signal early yesterday.

According to the Hong Kong Observatory, Pabuk slowed down significantly and weakened last night under the influence of another tropical storm, Wutip, which was forming over the northwestern Pacific.

Scientific officer Ginn Wing-lui said Pabuk would be closest to Hong Kong this morning. The weather will be cloudy with scattered squally showers and thunderstorms.

More rain is expected over the next few days.

At 1am, the center of Pabuk was estimated to be about 150 kilometers east of Hong Kong and was forecast to move west at about 20 kilometers per hour toward Guangdong.

Flights in and out of Hong Kong International Airport were normal yesterday.

Pabuk earlier hit the Philippines, where 11 people were reported killed, before hitting southern Taiwan. It also forced the evacuation of more than 20,000 people along the coast of Fujian province.

THE STANDBY SIGNAL NO. 1 IS IN FORCE.

THIS MEANS THAT A TROPICAL CYCLONE NOW CENTRED WITHIN 800 KILOMETRES OF HONG KONG MAY AFFECT US.

AT 10 A.M. THE CENTRE OF TROPICAL DEPRESSION PABUK WAS ESTIMATED TO BE ABOUT 100 KILOMETRES SOUTHWEST OF HONG KONG (NEAR 21.7 DEGREES NORTH 113.5 DEGREES EAST) AND IS FORECAST TO MOVE NORTHEAST SLOWLY TOWARDS THE PEARL RIVER ESTUARY.

PABUK CHANGED ITS DIRECTION OF MOVEMENT THIS MORNING AND IS NOW APPROACHING HONG KONG AGAIN.

ACCORDING TO ITS PRESENT TRACK, THE OBSERVATORY WILL CONSIDER THE ISSUANCE OF THE STRONG WIND SIGNAL NUMBER 3 LATER TODAY.

THE RAINBANDS OF PABUK WILL AFFECT HONG KONG FROM TIME TO TIME, BRINGING SQUALLY SHOWERS.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
T1 again. The rain is much heavier than even during the last T3! It's the same depression system that's made an S-shape path to hit us again!

Argh! I've been planning to visit MegaBox this week for skyline pictures but it looks like the haze free days are over.

It's not a Hong Kong summer if there are no hurricanes.

Hurricanes are much STRONGER than typhoons! They can't really compare!

Hurricanes and typhoons mean the same thing but are just different names used depending on the area of the world.
