I think that's some great news. Its deserted plot of land is very depressing.

Other than the cars that used to park there, it's been that way for about 50 years. I agree with you; still not very nice to see.

Has this actually started construction yet? I walked by there last week but I didn't notice.

I believe this project has been "indefinitely postponed".

I assure you, if this project resumes, in any form, news of it will hit this site within hours.

I've decided to improve the economy. Perhaps it will help if I buy a couple units to jump-start the project. Also, I will buy some units in the Spire. OK?

No, but seriously in the New Eastside section of the the Chicago Loop Wikipedia page it said this project was already under contruction and would be complete in 2009 which was a shock to me... I cleaned it up a little bit:

Nothing to see here. Walked by this site today and it's still just a big chunk of pavement.

Disappointing.. I was a little excited to see on Wikipedia that it's under construction, but was surprised I didn't actually see that coming.. makes sense it was untrue.

By the way, totally off-topic, but I just missed Obama's 30-minute infomercial , do you know if it's available online?

Foreclosure suit hits Mandarin Oriental developer
Email Print Reprints Digg del.icio.us By Alby Gallun, Feb. 18, 2009

(Crain’s) — A New York-based lender has filed a foreclosure suit against the developer of the proposed Mandarin Oriental tower just north of Millennium Park, a 74-story project with a lot of sizzle but not enough sales.

An affiliate of iStar Financial Inc. filed to foreclose on the development site at the northwest corner of Stetson Avenue and Lake Street, according to a document filed earlier this month with the Cook County Recorder.

The project’s developer, a group that includes former construction executive Gerard Kenny, had owed iStar as much as $43 million more than a year ago, but the filing did not disclose the balance on the loan, which was used to finance the acquisition of the property and pre-development costs.

The unbuilt condominium-and-hotel tower has struggled with slow sales and frozen credit markets that have made it nearly impossible to finance construction of such an extravagant project, which was considered a big risk even when lenders were loose with their money. Many observers predicted it was only a matter of time before the developer pulled the plug on the $750-million building.

Well, it is the least of the +700's I will cry over not coming to fruition. Never cared for its location much, its design was pretty average, and its height kept getting slashed a number of times. Oh well......

Good find. I've been curious about this, I even subscribed to a Google alert

"mandarin oriental" chicago

but never got any real news, maybe Google news will alert me later in the day

Well the good news I guess is the land could be cheap when the bank sells it, my wife's been looking at foreclosure properties to buy!
