Well, the building had a giant corner dome which was complemented with a tower on each side.

During the siege of Budapest, the corner dome and the towers on the sides were completely destroyed and the roof structure lost its character.

Unfortunately it wasn't reconstructed.

What an imposing, metropolitan building it was once! They should definitely reconstruct it one day.

I wonder why that corner looks like that. Was there an old cinema there?

Whatever it was, It looks like it wasn't an origional feature of the building. Those townhouses are several hundred years old so it couldn't have been. Probably an early 20th century theater or cinema might have made the corner like that...

You can ofthen see this in Belgian cities that hundreds of year old buildings recieved differend facades over the centuries, floor added, removed, added back on ect ect...makes them less authentic offcourse.
You can clearly see this in the above axample as well. Obviously the whole corner was one building once. Then they divided it in two buildings and added an extra floor on the left part of it, looks like an early (maybe 30ties or 40ties) 20th century extension. Only now to have the extra floor removed again and restore it in origional state....

However even more likely is that the whole buildig was a floor lower when first build and the 3rd and 4th floor was added somewhere in the 19th century.

This is beautiful, this is THE design for the theater building, and wonderful reconstruction! I would only add different doors, but VERY NICE!

Wow, that was quick, just yesterday I was biking past it and there was still scaffolding covering it.

It looks stunning though.
