A Brazilian modernist icon from 1947, turned slum, is getting a $20 Million USD restoration which will bring it back to its former glory and beyond.

Some truly beautiful architecture in Brazil. Now if only some of the other iconic modernist structures could get a similar treatment...

This one's from a couple of years ago in Rotterdam. The Justus van Effencomplex (Justuskwartier) was a complex built in the 1930's. It was the first 'tower block'(If you can call it that) type building in the Netherlands. It has wide balconies (don't know the proper word) where children could play outside and that even the milkman could ride his cart on. In the 1980's the place got whitewashed and the wooden window frames were replaced. It then turned into literally a sort of walled ghetto.

They tried to find the original colours of the windows frames and doors and tried their best to restore it to its former glory.

Great it got restored! I have the impression that many buildings in Holland that aren't protected get destroyed too easily to build new projects otherwise.

It's expensive to restore a complex of buildings, especially run down ones, but that ended up great! Probably one of the first modernist complexes in Western Europe as well, so it's an icon for Holland.

It looks like Art Nouveau mixed with Brutalism, very cool.

Hulst, The Netherlands

Hulst is a little fortified city in the South of Holland, close to Belgium

A few years ago a big area in the center was revitalised:

Those old-styled houses were built as new too.

No need to apologise, great restoration job in Montevideo which I might have missed if it had not been on this page!

Rokin Plaza

This office building in Amsterdam was empty for years. Eventhough it borders the busiest shopping street on one side and an important main road on the other side. So they gave it a reclad.

NRC Building

Another transformation from 1980s concrete to 2020s glass, right across the building from the previous post.
