San Francisco's "South of Market" (of "SoMa") neighborhood , once called "South of the Slot" for the cable car "slot" on Market St. After the 1906 earthquake it became an area of light industry but gradually much of that moved out. Abandoned industrial and warehouse buildings often became clubs and bars, many of the them gay and targeted at the "leather" crowd. A few were even gay bathhouses and sex clubs. In the 1990 "dot-com" era, a number of smaller condos went up on vacant lots and parking lots. But now it's turning into a high rise neighborhood: Count the cranes!

The prominent white marble building in the foreground is the San Francisco Mint . . . where they literally make money. This is not, however, where the gold of the Gold Rush was coined as it replaced the older structure (which still exists downtown) in the 1930s.

Very nice! That ground fountain is a very nice touch.

I like that they preserved that tower, it's a really good looking structure just on its own.

I also like that they restored that 1960s train station, it shows that Poland also cares about its more recent heritage

Well, the old commie station actually ended up like this

But they used the 'forms'/structural look of it in the new one.

I remember the first time I visited this station in the 80's and was stunned by the spectacular interior despite the drab grey communist cityscape around it. The next time I passed by train in 2008 and didn't stop and I must say I was embarrassed my Canadian friends say 3rd world rusty, dilapidated platforms, a riot of garish advertising and you could barely see this spectacular modern concrete buildings for its virtues....but now, I am stunned and can't wait for a chance to visit in person.
