Here are some more Infos about the new project: Überseequartier The Überseequartier is the centrepiece of Hamburg’s HafenCity urban development zone. The quarter will complement Hamburg’s current inner-city precinct, featuring a vibrant mix of cultural, leisure and entertainment facilities, a cruise ship terminal, shops, restaurants, hotels, service-sector outlets and residential housing. The main attraction will be the Maritime Erlebniswelt, a large complex that will house a giant aquarium and Science Center. ![]()

Currently under construction is the DALMANNKAI QUARTER:
The Dalmannkai quarter is a peninsula-like area between the Sandtorhafen harbour to the north and the Grasbrookhafen marina to the south. On completion, the quarter will comprise around 115,000 m2 of gross floor space, providing a sophisticated mix of inner-city residential housing, office space for service-sector companies, hospitality outlets with attractive waterfront seating, and a new concert hall, the Elbe Philharmonic (Elbphilharmonie). Construction start is scheduled for 2005. ![]() 12 ![]() 13 ![]() 14 ![]() 16 ![]() 17 ![]() 19 ![]() 20 ![]() 21 ![]() Overview High-quality Rental Apartments Construction of the first residential building at Dalmannkai started in January 2005. The Hamburg building cooperative “Bergedorf-Bille” constructs 42 high-quality rental apartments on the south side of Dalmannkai, directly at the waterfront of Grasbrookhafen harbour. The design of the two discrete structures was created by the architectural office of Prof. Jörg Friedrich. The buildings feature transparent and elegant façades, and sliding wooden shutters protect them from the sun and the wind. The apartments are flooded with light and some have a gallery-type layout extending on two levels. The staircases are of the straight-through type and receive natural light; they provide spectacular views of the Marco Polo Terraces and the Marina. ![]() ![]()

Absolutelly top quality throughout. I think this is a superb proposal, one of the best I am aware of anywhere. Very liveable and will probably have a great atmosphere. Lucky Hamburg.

Chicago Square
At the celebrations marking the 10th anniversary of Hamburg’s Sister City partnership with Chicago, Hamburg’s Minister responsible for urban development and environment, Dr. Michael Freytag, unveiled the City’s plans to develop a ‘Chicago Square’ area, with surrounding high-rise buildings, in the Elbbrücken district (east-end of the Hafencity). The plans will draw heavily on the high-rise expertise of architects from Chicago.

Here are some more brand new facts about the plans of the 5 diffrent architectures.
Murphy/Jahn: The highest tower of the plan will be about 350 meter high and looks like a pyramid Jeanne Gang: Plans a 260 meter high tower that is inspired by an habour crane Mark Sexton: A exhibition centre and a 189 meter tower Dirk Lohan: 4 buildings reaching up to 215 meter John Rohan: 5 buildings (max. height: 180 meter) I think pics of the jeanne Gang, Mark Sexton, Dirk Lohan, John Rohan Plan will be released in the next days. |

Have to admit, there is a lot to envy in those images which have been posted-like the OMA project a lot, but generally have to say that Hamburg looks pretty damned nice. It seems as though they are taking a chance on some projects, especially with the Elbphilharmonie-which is great, considering Germany's conservative- yet nicely executed architecture.
Muss mal Hamburg besuchen kommen, wenn ich mal oben bin nischt!! p5 |

Hamburg is my 2nd favourite city in Germany after Berlin. If projects like shown here go through, I can imagine it making the top spot. The city already is pretty amazing, it's hard to imagine what level it will take once these projects are completed.
Only problem is, it may take several decades.

Bloody hell, could that actually happen? I like it, quite a departure from Hamburgs current low rise development though and so much at once. That's 12 skyscrapers proposed at once including Europes tallest!
