This looks really good! Hafencity might turn out to be one of the very few build from scratch modern cities, that actually work. It's dense, it got nice little parks and plazas, all the water makes it also really interesting. It's architecture looks really attractive too, perfectly fitting Hamburg's local stylistic architecture traits, with some amazing and iconic stand outs like the Elbphilharmonie, Cinnamon Tower and the future Science Center.

Is there still the spider problem?

They had for years (might have still) a plaque of these little fellows :

Called bridge spider or grey cross spider.

Here a documentary (in German) about spiders in Hafencity:

Doesn't seem too different from my house around this time of the year, really.

I've arachnophobia, so I could neither visit you nor Hafencity. (Had to search and post the spider pic and video with half closed eyes, lol.)

Luckily, they tend to stay outside, near a street light, and not creep inside. I don't like them very near me, but they do a good job keeping the presence of flies and mosquitoes to a minimum.

I visited Hafencity last year in October, which is supposed to be at the end of the peak of 'spider season', but I can't remember noticing a plague. Do they really cause more harm than just leaving dirt behind on flashy new windows?

Actually there was never a spider problem in the Hafen City. It was just one of those typical German behavours of finding something that might be bad, exaggerate it and make a "Ha-Ha, I knew it" blame-arcticle out of it. Sure there are spiders in the Hafen City like they are anywhere else alongside the river, since other insects can breed there and the spider eat them. They are not venom, they don't destroy buildings and they will not take your job. Now with the spider their natural enemies will come (birds) and eat them. So I already know what the next Anti-Hafen-City blame article will be about. "Bird-plaque in Hafen-City. Bird-shit everywhere"

I really like most of the brick terraces and their mosaic structures wrapped around the HafenCity embankments, as shown here (Baufeld 57):
